The resulting Bibliografía cronológica de la lingüística, la gramática y la lexicografía del español: Desde los principios hasta el año 1600 (BICRES) began appearing in 1994. BICRES I covered the period from the early beginnings to 1600), followed by BICRES II (1601–1700), BICRES III (1701–1800), and together with Miguel Ángel Esparza Torres of Madrid there followed BICRES IV (1801 to 1860). Now, the fifth volume, has become available, covering the years from 1861 to 1899. Access to the bibliographical information of altogether 5,272 titles is facilitated by several detailed indexes, such as a short title index, a listing of printers, publishers and places of production, and an author index. More than twenty years of research in the major libraries of Spain and other European countries have gone into this unique work — relative sources of the Americas have also been covered — making it exhaustive source for any serious scholar of any possible aspect of the Spanish language.

Book excerpt: "First edition of a title commonly referred to as “The First Text-Book Printed in California;” although Augustin Vicente Zamorano issued three small educational pamphlets in the 1830s. Cowan more accurately writes “This is believed to be the first educational work published in California after American rule.” It was sold by one of the earliest California booksellers, Marvin & Hitchcock, and published by them in San Francisco just three years after the conquest of California from Mexico. Most of the text consists of a Spanish-language grammar encouraging bilingual education in the new state. At the end is a historical essay which includes statistics and information about California. The author on the title page is José de Urcullu, a former Spanish infantry captain who made a living writing liberal theatrical works before the fall of the Constitution of Cadiz (1814), at which time Urcullu went to London and established a career as a writer, mathematician, educator, grammarian, and Spanish / English translator. Urcullu composed numerous catechisms for children, small volumes in duodecimo, illustrated with engravings, from 100 to 150 pages, which served as didactic introductions in various disciplines. It is unknown who adapted Urcullu's Spanish Grammar for California, but one candidate that has been suggested is A. This study, charting the construction of a Catalan identity from the nineteenth-century cultural renaissance until the present day, explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia. Drawing on postcolonial and multicultural literary theories, it argues that Castilian- and Catalan-language narratives are expressions of the same culture. Through detailed analyses of texts by Terenci Moix, Francisco Candel, Ignasi Riera, Montserrat Roig, Juan Marsé, Ramon Pallicé, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, among others, the author demonstrates that such writers share similar preoccupations and points of view and also engage in a complex literary and cultural dialogue that cuts across the established linguistic divisions that characterise cultural politics in Catalonia. The Catalan literary establishment's exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness' ischallenged and the author proposes redefining traditional understandings of Catalan literature to take into account texts produced by all members of Catalan society. Stewart King is a lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Monash University, Australia.
