Book Crisis Globalization and Governance

Download or read book Crisis Globalization and Governance written by Nehme Azoury and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these constantly challenging times, business practices that were once considered successful, applicable and rewarding are questioned by the implications of increased globalization. National, regional and international market crises have raised the barriers for a necessary implementation of practices related, but not limited, to ethics and governance. In this spirit, this book tackles a potential and desirable way of reinventing and implementing specific types of governance (both at the private and public levels), in order to reorient the current globalization process in a safer and much more efficient way. It is grounded mainly in three disciplines: the first is the economic sciences, given the book’s concern with microeconomic regulation and economic regulation. The second, the business sciences field, allows for the discussion of strategies of relocalization of businesses, social governance and its impact on organizations, the management of information, and disclosure. The final area of study detailed in the book is the political and administrative field, as it sheds light on the public dimension of governance in the educational sector. In short, this book provides strategies for the promotion or restoration of public interest and social democracy.

Book The International Legal System in Quest of Equity and Universality

Download or read book The International Legal System in Quest of Equity and Universality written by Laurence Boisson de Chazournes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Abi-Saab began his writing and teaching at a time when the process of decolonization, and thereafter the quest for emancipation, began to make its far-reaching impact on the international scene, producing significant changes in the international environment, both quantitatively in increasing the number of nation-States and qualitatively in changing patterns of interests and claims. This was bound to result in new pressures on the international legal system itself and in a questioning of the traditional Eurocentric content of international law. In his work and teaching Professor Abi-Saab viewed the dynamics of international law as a function of two driving forces: the emergence of the third world and the sense of injustice. In his view, the first driving force - the emergence of the third world - raised the problem of exclusion: exclusion from participation in the elaboration of international law and the decision-making process, and exclusion as beneficiaries of the resulting rules of international law. At the same time, this new force introduced diversity into the international scene, reflecting the richness of the international community in its different facets. This process remains relevant today, reflecting the contemporary problem of exclusion of new actors as well as their quest for participation. The second driving force - the sense of injustice - posed a teleological problem for him, that of defining community values in order that they capture the different facets of justice, whether formal or distributive. So long as there is no effective organic structure, international law in his view will continue to remain effectiveness-oriented, reflecting rather than impacting on the structures of power. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that there is an on-going process of development of community values and interests; as Georges Abi-Saab wrote with reference to international crimes: `law, like all social phenomena, is a continuous unfolding, a continuous process of elaboration'. He has also considered that the dynamics of the international legal process itself can be captured from the perspective of international organizations as vehicles for change in the international system. From his early writings, Georges Abi-Saab approached the United Nations Charter as a blueprint - both normative and institutional - for a certain type of international society. International institutions with all their imperfections, continue for him to be the means of realization of the law of cooperation which lies at the heart of his concept of the international system. The themes selected for this volume in honour of Professor Georges Abi-Saab are intended to reflect his unique and pioneering contribution to the field of international law. The contributors are drawn from what he has always considered to be his large `family' of former students: in his forty years of teaching, Georges Abi-Saab has acted as mentor to generations of students from all over the world who have benefited from his vision, insights, originality and creative and stimulating use of language. The contributors also include colleagues and friends who share a similar vision of the international legal system.

Book Social Participation in Water Governance and Management

Download or read book Social Participation in Water Governance and Management written by Kate A. Berry and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2010 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Social participation in water management and governance recently became a reality in many economies and societies. Yet the dimensions in which power regulation, social equity and democracy-building are connected with participation have been only tangentially analyzed for the water sector. Understanding the growing interest in social participation involves appreciating the specificity of the contemporary period within its historic and geographic contexts as well as uncovering larger political, economic and cultural trends of recent decades which frame participatory actions. Within a wide variety of cases presented from around the world, the reader will find critical analyses of participation and an array of political ecological processes that influence water governance. Sixteen chapters from a diverse group of scholars and practitioners examine water rights definition, hydropower dam construction, urban river renewal, irrigation organizations, water development NGOs, river basin management, water policy implementation and judicial decision-making in water conflicts. Yet there are commonalities in participatory experiences across this spectrum of water issues. The book's five sections highlight key dimensions of contemporary water management that influence, and in turn are influenced by, social participation. These sections are: participation and indigenous water governance; participation and the dynamics of gender in water management; participation and river basin governance; participation and implementation of water management and participation and the politics of water governance."--Back cover.

Book Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference of Economics and Management CIREG 2016 Volume I

Download or read book Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference of Economics and Management CIREG 2016 Volume I written by Houcine Berbou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together papers presented at the 3rd Conference of Research in Economics and Management (CIREG) held in Morocco in May 2016. With a focus on the challenges of SMEs and innovative solutions, they highlight the contribution of researchers in the fields of business and management, with all their micro and macro-economic aspects. They shed light on the universal scientific vision of the importance of SMEs with answers relevant to their local context and adapted to their specific national situation. The relevance of SME research lies in its heuristic value of analyzing change, rather than in constructing a category, a particularly useful empirical concept. This first volume is focused on economic issues.

Book Governance and Democracy

Download or read book Governance and Democracy written by Arthur Benz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this new collection brings together country specialists, researchers on the European Union, and leading international relations scholars to tackle a crucial question: how compatible are today’s new patterns of ‘policy networks’ and ‘multi-level’ governance with democratic standards? This important question is attracting attention both in political science and in political practices. In political science, the question is mainly dealt with in separated sub-disciplines, which focus on different levels of politics. So far, no serious exchange has actually taken place between authors working on these different levels. The editors of this book – both specialists of network and multi-level governance – show that although the issue is raised differently in the institutional settings of the national state, the European Union, or transnational governance, excellent insights can be gained by comparison across these settings. This major new contribution includes cutting edge work from junior scholars alongside chapters by leading specialists of governance such as Guy Peters, Jon Pierre, Philippe C. Schmitter and Thomas Risse. It also contains a collection of new case studies, theoretical conceptualisations and normative proposals for solutions dealing with the issue of democratic deficits, which all give the reader a better understanding of the most crucial problems and perspectives of democracy in different patterns of "governance" beyond conventional ‘government’ approaches. This is a valuable book for policy analysts, students of the European Union and international relations, and all students in social and political science.
