Book Water and Cities in Latin America

Download or read book Water and Cities in Latin America written by Ismael Aguilar-Barajas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 80 per cent of the population of Latin America is concentrated in urban centres. Pressure on water resources and water management in cities therefore provide major challenges. Despite the importance of the issues, there has been little systematic coverage of the topic in book form. This work fills a gap in the literature by providing both thematic overviews and case study chapters. It reviews key aspects of why water matters in cities and presents case studies on topics such as groundwater management, green growth and water services, inequalities in water supply, the financing of water services and flood management. Detailed examples are described from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, and there is also a chapter comparing lessons which might be learnt from US cities. Contributing authors are drawn from both within and outside the region, including from the Inter-American Development Bank, OECD and World Bank to set the issues in a global context.

Book Water Resources of Chile

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bonifacio Fernández
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-12-03
  • ISBN : 3030569012
  • Pages : 439 pages

Download or read book Water Resources of Chile written by Bonifacio Fernández and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile is a privileged country in terms of water resources, with an average annual runoff of approximately 50,000 m3/person. However, water availability varies enormously in space, as less than 1,000 m3/person are available for more than 50% of the population. The temporal and spatial distribution of water resources is driven by processes highly variables across a country with different climates explained not only by a large range of latitudes (from 17° to 56° south), but also the presence of the Pacific Ocean and the Andes with peaks up to 7000 m. This geography makes of Chile a true natural laboratory in which water is essential for the society and the economy of the country. The relevance of water resources for the country has become even more significant in the context of a mega-drought that has affected practically the entire territory in recent years, although large floods such as those in Atacama 2015 and 2017 also take place periodically. This unique book brings together the state-of-art knowledge about the hydrology of Chile and its water resources, with a particular focus on quantitative aspects. The chapters are prepared by many of the most relevant researchers and practitioners working in water resources in the country. High-quality research contributions on climate and meteorology, surface and subsurface hydrology, water quality, water monitoring, water resource and global change, among other issues, are presented in this unique book, which offers a useful guide for academicians, researchers, practitioners and managers dealing with diverse water-related issues in Chile and other regions with similar characteristics

Book Management of Water Resources in Protected Areas

Download or read book Management of Water Resources in Protected Areas written by Hermes Farfán González and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural ecosystems are heavily dependent on water, as it is essential to the development of life. The ecology and landscape play an important role in the quality and availability of water. It is no coincidence that exceptional hydrological phenomena are found in protected areas. Such is the case with, for example, the geothermic occurrences (principally, geysers) in America's Yellowstone National Park , the oldest park in the world. The Ramsar wetlands (where the ecosystem’s dependency on water is strongly evident), The Iguaçu Falls (on the border of Argentina and Brazil), or the Zapata Swamp (the largest of its kind on the Caribbean island of Cuba) further exemplify this point. However, in many cases, the conservation strategies for hydraulic resources in protected areas are ignored, or simply deprived of the attention they require. There are many types of suitable management strategies for planning and protecting our valuable treasures. Hydraulic resource management in protected areas is something that must not be separated from these conservation measures. The first Symposium for the Management of Hydraulic Resources in Protected Areas was intended to be a framework of communication about experiences with water resource management in protected areas. Advances in research and possible solutions to the problems within these areas were discussed. The contributions in this proceedings volume are grouped under seven main themes: Purification and reuse of wastewater in rural communities; Impact of public use on water resources; Vulnerability and risks associated with aquifers, Design and management water resources in protected areas; Research and monitoring of water resources in protected areas; Water and its importance as a source of renewable energy in protected spaces; and Geodiversity and conservation of areas with hydraulic heritage.

Book Lightweight Energy

Download or read book Lightweight Energy written by Alessandra Zanelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores membrane materials as a means of translating natural and renewable resources into a more flexible, dynamic, and reactive architectural skin. It represents the first time that energy-saving design has been addressed systematically in relation to lightweight building systems and tensile membranes. Understanding of the energetic behavior of membranes and foils used as a building envelope is a fundamental theme, as it is the integration of flexible photovoltaics in membranes, as well as the exploitation of water and wind resources. A theoretical, methodological framework for consciously designing the membrane life cycle is presented. The authors cross-cut and combine exploration of climate-based design methodology and life cycle thinking strategies. Both active and passive systems are investigated, referring to alternative productive resources like sun, wind, and water. Case studies are brought forward in the book’s second half, highlighting energy lightness for an increasingly dematerialized architecture and addressing inherent issues. Four main research and development paths are presented, the first two focusing on advancements in façade materials and Photovoltaic systems applicable to membrane architecture, the third referring to fog and dew harvesting and the fourth dealing with the future frontier of flexible transparency and designs for well-being through a passive solar system.

Developments and Approaches in Science Diplomacy: Latin America and the Caribbean addresses this lack of knowledge head-on, offering a detailed exploration of science diplomacy in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its implications for development. By focusing on real-world cases and practical insights, this book provides a roadmap for policymakers, diplomats, and researchers to harness the power of science diplomacy for sustainable development. Whether you're a researcher looking to deepen your understanding of science diplomacy or a policymaker seeking actionable strategies, this book offers a valuable resource. It highlights the importance of international engagement and collaboration in achieving development objectives, particularly in the context of the scientific diaspora and emerging economies. Through this lens, the book offers innovative solutions and strategies applied in Latin America and other regions facing similar challenges.
