Download or read book Poussin and the Poetics of Painting written by Jonathan Unglaub and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Poussin cultivated a poetics of painting from the literary culture of his own time, and especially through his response to the work of Torquato Tasso. Tasso's poetic discourses were the most important source for Poussin's theory of painting. Poussin does not merely illustrate Tasso's verse, but cultivates pictorial means to refashion the poet's metaphors of desire. Offering new interpretations of these works, this book also investigates Poussin's larger literary culture and how this context illuminates the artist's response to contemporary poetic texts, especially in his mythological paintings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerusalem Delivered Gerusalemme Liberata Torquato Tasso THE COMPLETE 20 CANTOS Jerusalem Delivered is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso first published in 1581, which tells a largely mythified version of the First Crusade in which Christian knights, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. The poem is composed of eight line stanzas grouped into 20 cantos of varying length. The work belongs to the Italian Renaissance tradition of the romantic epic poem, and Tasso frequently borrows plot elements and character types directly from Ariosto's Orlando furioso. Tasso's poem also has elements inspired by the classical epics of Homer and Virgil (especially in those sections of their works that tell of sieges and warfare). One of the most characteristic literary devices in Tasso's poem is the emotional conundrum endured by characters torn between their heart and their duty; the depiction of love at odds with martial valour or honor is a central source of lyrical passion in the poem. TORQUATO TASSO was born at Sorrento on March 11, 1544, and died in Rome on April 25, 1595, aged fifty-one. He belonged to an old family of Bergamo, and was a poet's son. His father Bernardo Tasso, full fifty years old at the time of his son's birth, had then been for thirteen years in the service of Ferrante Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, and had married in 1536 the beautiful and spiritual Porzia de' Rossi, of the house of the Marquises of Calenzano. Their son Torquato was first educated at schools of the Jesuits in Naples, Rome, and Bergamo. They were the best schools of the time. At eight years old the boy read Greek and Latin, and had begun to write Italian verse. Then he was in Pesaro for a time, sharing the education given to the son of the Duke of Urbino. After this he was for a year in Venice with his father, and then, at the age of thirteen, he was sent to study law at Padua.

Book Jerusalem Delivered Gerusalemme Liberata

Download or read book Jerusalem Delivered Gerusalemme Liberata written by Torquato Tasso and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1581, Torquato Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered (Gerusalemme liberata)" is a magical epic poem that tells the story of the First Crusade, led by Godfrey of Bouillon and other European noblemen and warriors. The story is full of supernatural characters and events. It develops during the bloody siege of Jerusalem, against the Moors and their famous leader, Soliman. The story in "Jerusalem Delivered" is violent and erotic, especially the torrid love affair between Tancred, the bravest of the Christians, and Clorinda, a fierce but beautiful warrioress. Written in the XVI century, "Jerusalem Delivered" book captures the spirit and ideology of the Middle Ages, specifically the XI century. Like in "Curial and Guelfa", Christian symbols mix with Greco-Roman ones, in a tale of war and sex. Tasso's images are powerful and the poetry of "Jerusalem Delivered" is anything but childish or naive. As I said, it is violent and full of action. It contains no boring digressions or reflections, but pure action. Today, "Jerusalem Delivered" is considered to be a one the masterpieces of Italian literature. This Spenserian translation by Edward Fairfax, rendered in 1600, is the only significant translation that has endured the test of time.

Book Tasso and Milton

Download or read book Tasso and Milton written by Judith A. Kates and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Christian poets of the Renaissance turned toward the poetic works of Classical antiquity, the greatest achievements that they encountered were the epics of Virgil and Homer. But in their desire to emulate the ancient masters they confronted the problem of creating a recognizable epic narrative. Focusing on Tasso's La Gerusalemme liberata and on Milton's better-known Paradise Lost, Professor Kates subtly analyzes the manner in which these works resolve the conflict of pagan and Christian values.

Book Discourses of Anger in the Early Modern Period

Download or read book Discourses of Anger in the Early Modern Period written by Karl A.E. Enenkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern anger is informed by fundamental paradoxes: qualified as a sin since the Middle Ages, it was still attributed a valuable function in the service of restoring social order; at the same time, the fight against one’s own anger was perceived as exceedingly difficult. And while it was seen as essential for the defence of an individual’s social position, it was at the same time considered a self-destructive force. The contributions in this volume converge in the aim of mapping out the discursive networks in which anger featured and how they all generated their own version, assessment, and semantics of anger. These discourses include philosophy and theology, poetry, medicine, law, political theory, and art. Contributors: David M. Barbee, Maria Berbara, Tamás Demeter, Jan-Frans van Dijkhuizen, Betül Dilmac, Karl Enenkel, Tilman Haug, Michael Krewet, Johannes F. Book Exhortations to Women and to Others If They Please

Download or read book Exhortations to Women and to Others If They Please written by Lucrezia Marinella and published by Acmrs Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this translation of Marinella's Exhortations to Women and to Others if They Please we can now read another crucial text from her extensive body of work, one that signals a radical ideological shift from her best known text, The Nobility and Excellence of Women; we can thus enjoy a fuller picture of the author and her opinions. Only three copies of Exhortations have been located in any library, and in the absence of a critical edition this translation will prove to be a point of reference for scholars and students alike. Benedetti's thorough introduction situates Marinella and her works within early seventeenth-century Venetian culture and the Counter-Reformation more broadly, in a way that is profoundly influenced by philology and is also theoretically sound. --Maria Galli Stampino Associate Professor of French and Italian University of Miami
