Or, le terme fou, qui introduit à l'origine un espace thématique, n'éclaire jamais la notion de folie autrement que par des voies relativisées, ironiques ou plurielles. Le personnage fou devient le lieu plyphonique qui subvertit la raison. Mais le personnage fou, est, à un autre niveau, un élément structurant de l'histoire ;il génére le désordre. Et cette mise en relation,à travers différentes catégories du récit, du personnage fou et du désordre, s'étend à l'oeuvre dans son ensemble. En brisant les codes propres au roman, en y introduisant la mémoire anonyme des contes et l'éxagération épique ou en rendant impossible tout processus d'identification avec les personnages, les romanciers africains construisent des textes violents ou le lecteur est sans cesse confronté au non-sens et ou l'écriture crée un doute sur la raison. En effet, l'exces d'imges, d'associations, le jeu incessant entre signifiant et signifié perturbe la lecture et demande une vigilance constante pour ne pas se perdre au fil des mots sans rimes ni raison. Les romanciers africains, en traçant l'aventure d'une folie, choisissent d'interroger les mots et leur rapport au monde.

Ce qui frappe, même en parcourant ce roman, c'est l'omniprésence de la mort, certains titres portent le mot. La récurrence de la mort violente est à mettre en rapport avec les régimes autoritaires en Afrique noire. L'évolution de la société africaine a introduit un fait significatif que le roman manifeste, celui de la déritualisation de la mort, consécutif à l'étiolement des mythes. Face à l'angoisse de l'existence, le roman se réapproprie le système de pensée de la mort de la société africaine traditionnelle. Il consiste à faire jouer le conflit permanent entre " l'imaginaire pulsionnel " et " l'imaginaire rationnel " et, surtout, leur complémentarité. L'antagonisme dynamique entre le rationnel et le pulsionnel dans la phase constructive de leur duplicité permet de bâtir des mythes qui rendent l'existence supportable. C'est sur ce fond culturel que le roman construit des utopies pour postuler un devenir autre.
