El primer artículo (de Bruno Borge y Dalila Serebrinsky) traza un mapa de un tema realmente crucial en la reflexión sobre las ciencias, la cuestión del realismo, que en algún sentido en las últimas décadas del siglo XX había quedado un tanto desdibujado, probablemente por los excesos de los relativismos posmodernos. El segundo artículo (de Olimpia Lombardi) recorre los principales temas y problemas de la actual filosofia de la física, una de las filosofías especiales de la ciencia que fueron adquiriendo prota-gonismo en las últimas décadas del siglo XX. En el siguiente trabajo, Héctor Palma hace lo propio con otra de las filosofías especiales, en este caso de la biología. Los siguientes dos artículos (ambos de Martín Prieto) analizan la siempre compleja y polifacética relación entre ciencia y política en lo que el autor llama modelo de la ciencia con política y sin política. El sexto trabajo (de Marcelo Gorga) analiza en clave ética, política y epistemológica algunos de los desarrollos de la neurología. El último artículo (de Héctor Palma) analiza distintos aspectos del transhumanismo científico tecnológico, principalmente en su relación con el llamado mejoramiento genético de los humanos.

Book excerpt: Evoking the famous watchwords of Argentine president Domingo Sarmiento (1868–74), Between Civilization and Barbarism explores the positioning of women within the Argentine nation and argues that women neither sought alliance with the “civilizing” agenda of leading statesmen nor found identity in the extreme poses of “barbarism,” to which some intellectuals had condemned them. Instead, women used literary and political texts to surpass the tightly outlined roles assigned to them. Beginning with literary and journalistic texts written by and about women from the time of Sarmiento, Francine Masiello traces strategic shifts in the discourse on gender at moments of national crisis. She considers not only novels and guides to female behavior written by and for privileged women but also newspapers and political tracts produced by women of the working class.
