Avant celle-ci, elle avait cependant bénéficié d'un statut d'autonomie en tant que Grand-Duché durant plus d'un siècle, de 1809 à 1917, dans le cadre de l'empire des Tsars. Mais pendant toute la période historique du XIe au début du XIXe, le peuple finnois après avoir été subjugué par les Suédois avait été intégré au royaume des Trois Couronnes qui lui a légué des traditions administratives et juridiques, économiques et sociales, intellectuelles et spirituelles, et notamment la religion réformée. La Finlande appartient au groupe européen des cinq pays du Nord avec la Suède, le Danemark, la Norvège et l'Islande caractérisés par leurs régimes politiques démocratiques et leurs structures économiques et sociales marquées par le modèle de l'Etat-Providence profondément réformé et le haut niveau de développement des activités économiques, notamment industrielles, orientées vers les technologies de pointe comme en témoigne le succès mondial de la firme Nokia. Elle apparaît cependant fortement originale dans cet ensemble nordique. Par son appartenance linguistique au groupe finno-ougrien auquel elle se distingue des quatre pays scandinaves qui parlent des langues germaniques. Elle s'en distingue aussi par un passé historique très troublé, dominé en grande partie par sa position géographique qui l'a constamment mise en contact du monde russe et orthodoxe à l'est et du monde scandinave et luthérien à l'ouest entre lesquels elle fut longtemps disputée. L'indépendance qui l'a fait échapper à l'emprise russe n'a pas fait disparaître les contraintes géopolitiques car son territoire reste placé sous la pression d'une Russie héritière de l'U.R.S.S., qui s'exerce toujours sur une longue frontière. Le destin de la Finlande fut toujours d'être aux avants-postes de l'Ouest européen face à l'Est russe.
