Book Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni 1667 1740 and the Vatican Tomb of Pope Alexander VIII

Download or read book Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni 1667 1740 and the Vatican Tomb of Pope Alexander VIII written by Edward J. Olszewski and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the commission of the Vatican tomb of Pope Alexander VIII Ottoboni by his great-nephew Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. Although neglected for centuries, the Ottoboni monument occupies the most strategic liturgical position in the complex of tombs in the Vatican basilica. It is impressive in scale, & offers a commanding presence on the path from the papal entryway to the apse & main altar, with a majestic papal effigy, a visually compelling narrative relief carving, & symbolically important allegories. Using unpublished archival documents in the Vatican & Lateran archives, this study discusses in detail the 30-year campaign for the construction of the tomb & identifies the artists & artisans responsible for the project. The monograph is comprehensive in its stylistic analysis, exploration of iconography, discussion of liturgical practice, & consideration of studio procedures beginning with patron & artist, architect & sculptors, & sculptor & artisans. reveals why the project required three decades to complete. "A well-written, informative, & important monograph. And, in the process, he has expanded our understanding of contemporary workshop practice and art making in the Rome of the later Baroque period. There are sections where the author's meticulous care & insightful reconstruction of events gives the reader a sense of ""being there"" in the day-to-day process of work on the site. These parts make for especially exciting and engaging reading." -- "An absolutely wonderful piece of work."

Book Dino Buzzati and Anglo American Culture

Download or read book Dino Buzzati and Anglo American Culture written by Valentina Polcini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the relationship between Dino Buzzati’s fiction and Anglo-American culture by focusing on his re-use of visual texts (Arthur Rackham’s illustrations), narrative sources (Joseph Conrad’s novels), and topoi belonging to such genres as the seafaring tale, the ghost story and the Christmas story. Tracing Buzzati’s recurring theme of the loss of imagination, Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture shows that, far from being a mere imitator, he carries on an original and conscious reworking of pre-existing literary motifs. Especially through the adoption of intertextual strategies, Buzzati laments the lack of an imaginative urge in contemporary society and attempts a recovery of the fantastic imagery of his models. Alongside a reconsideration of Buzzati’s intertextuality, this book offers new insights into Buzzati’s fantastic fiction, by highlighting its playful and ironic component as opposed to the more overtly pervading sense of gloominess and nostalgia. Furthermore, while filling a gap in the critical study of Buzzati in the English-speaking world, the book contributes towards a general reassessment of an author who, although regarded as minor for many years, can rightly be ranked among the masters of twentieth-century fantastic literature.

Book The Cult of St Clare of Assisi in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book The Cult of St Clare of Assisi in Early Modern Italy written by NiritBen-Aryeh Debby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding the wealth of material published about St Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) in the context of medieval scholarship, and the wealth of visual material regarding her, there is a dearth of published scholarship concerning her cult in the early modern period. This work examines the representations of St Clare in the Italian visual tradition from the thirteenth century on, but especially between the fifteenth and the mid-seventeenth centuries, in the context of mendicant activity. Through an examination of such diverse visual images as prints, drawings, panels, sculptures, minor arts, and frescoes in relation to sermons of Franciscan preachers, starting in the thirteenth century but focusing primarily on the later tradition of early modernity, the book highlights the cult of women saints and its role in the reform movements of the Osservanza and the Catholic Reformation and in the face of Muslim-Christian encounter of the early modern era. Debby?s analyses of the preaching of the times and iconographic examination of neglected artistic sources makes the book a significant contribution to research in art history, sermon studies, gender studies, and theology.

Download or read book The Bianchi of 1399 written by Daniel E. Bornstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1399 a wave of popular devotion swept through Italy from the Alps to Rome. Men, women, and children from city and countryside joined in pious processions lasting nine days. Dubbed "Bianchi" because of their white robes, they listened to sermons, sang hymns, observed dietary restrictions, and prayed for "peace and mercy." Daniel E. Bornstein reconstructs the history of the Bianchi in unparalleled detail, and his conclusions offer new insight into the character of late medieval Christianity. Drawing on a wide range of sources including diaries, hymns, and government reports, Bornstein offers nuanced analyses of both the spiritual and the political dimensions of the movement. After describing the origins of the Bianchi as a movement concerned with the conflict and violence of the age, he traces its spread through Italy, paying particular attention to local variations. Focusing on the relationship between lay participants and ecclesiastical authorities, Bornstein demonstrates that the Bianchi represent what might be called a popular orthodoxy—a spontaneous and deeply sincere rallying to the approved beliefs and traditional practices of the church. In conclusion, he argues that scholars who have assumed a sharp division between lay and clerical religion in the late Middle Ages have misconstrued the development of Christianity in fundamental ways.
