Book Approaching Hysteria

Download or read book Approaching Hysteria written by Mark S. Micale and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few diseases have exercised the Western imagination as chronically as hysteria--from the wandering womb of ancient Greek medicine, to the demonically possessed witch of the Renaissance; from the "vaporous" salong women of Enlightenment Paris, through to the celebrated patients of Sigmund Freud, with their extravagant, erotically charged symptoms. In this fascnating and authoritative book, Mark Micale surveys the range of past and present readings of hysteria by intellectual historians; historians of science and medicine; scholars in gender studies, art history, and literature; and psychoanalysts, psychiatriasts, clinical psychologists, and neurologists. In so doing, he explores numerous questions raised by this evergrowing body of literature: Why, in recent years, has the history of hysterical disorders carried such resonance for commentators in the sciences and humanities? What can we learn form the textual traditions of hysteria about writing the history of disease in general? What is the broader cultural meaning of the new hysteria studies? In the second half of the book, Micale discusses the many historical "cultures of hysteria." He reconstructs in detail the past usages of the hysteria concept as a powerful, descriptive trope in various nonmedical domains, including poetry, fiction, theater, social thought, political criticism, and the arts His book is a pioneering attempt to write the historical phenomenology of disease in an age preoccupied with health, and a prescriptive remedy for writing histories of disease in the future. Mark S. Micale is Assistant Professor of History at Yale. He is the editor of Beyond the Unconscious: Essays of Henri F. Ellenberger (Princeton). Originally published in 1994. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Sexual Liberation and Religion in Nineteenth Century Europe

Download or read book Sexual Liberation and Religion in Nineteenth Century Europe written by J. Michael Phayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, originally published in 1977, demonstrates that a change in mentality in the nineteenth-century drifted from traditional sexual controls and allowed them greater sexual freedom and indulgence. The process occurred in such a way that the proletariat never considered whether their newly found sexual liberation might be in conflict with the moral teachings of the Church. This title will be of interest to students of history and religion.

Book Zola and Film

  • Author : Anna Gural-Migdal
  • Publisher : McFarland

Download or read book Zola and Film written by Anna Gural-Migdal and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-04-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French novelist Emile Zola, noted for his championship of the Naturalist novel, has been one of the most adapted authors in world literature. There have been approximately 80 film adaptations of his late 19th century novels and short stories, many of which occurred during the silent era of international film production (1895-1927). While the aesthetic elements of Zola's fiction continue to appeal to international cinema, the author's thematic naturalism and his "scientific methodology" have provided an ideological framework that incorporates art, science and history into the many cinematic adaptations of his work. This collection of essays, contributed by scholars of French literature and film, explores the dynamic relationship between Zola's fiction and its film adaptations, examining critically significant cinematic adaptations of Zola's novels from a variety of theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives. The 13 essays discuss the adaptation of Zola's works within the limitations of the silent cinema; the challenges posed by film censorship and the notoriety of the author's naturalist text; the ideological inflection given to Zola's working class narratives; and Zola's representation of women. Zola's works are placed within their respective historical contexts, as the essays address encoded anti-Nazi sentiment in films produced under the German occupation of France during World War II and the French Communist Party's reception of the filmic adaptation of Germinal. Other adapted works addressed in these chapters include La Terre, Nana, La Bete humaine, Au Bonheur des Dames, Therese Raquin, Gervaise and Pot-Bouille.

Book The Vincentians A General History of the Congregation of the Mission

Download or read book The Vincentians A General History of the Congregation of the Mission written by John E. Rybolt and published by New City Press. This book was released on with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their mission was humble and simple: to reach the poor country people, who suffered from ignorance of their faith, a debased clergy, and poverty. In response, Vincent De Paul defined the vocation of his “Little Company” as preaching local missions for free, educating the clergy, and working to relieve the people’s poverty. Soon, however, this vocation was complicated by commands to minister to royal families, including Louis xiv of France and the kings and queens of Poland, which would embroil the Vincentians in international and ecclesiastical politics. In addition, they would begin dangerous foreign missions, such as ministering to the Christian captives of the Barbary pirates, the debased colonists and rebellious natives of Madagascar, and the vendetta-prone Corsicans. For the first time, modern readers have a thoroughly researched history based on original documents and the studies of numerous scholars, past and present. It portrays the Vincentians’ daily lives and describes their failings as well as their exalted acts of heroism. It also details the social and political milieus that conditioned their lives and work. It is an important, down-to-earth side of history not often told.
