Book A History of Contemporary Italy

Download or read book A History of Contemporary Italy written by Paul Ginsborg and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a war-torn and poverty-stricken country, regional and predominantly agrarian, to the success story of recent years, Italy has witnessed the most profound transformation--economic, social and demographic--in its entire history. Yet the other recurrent theme of the period has been the overwhelming need for political reform--and the repeated failure to achieve it. Professor Ginsborg's authoritative work--the first to combine social and political perspectives--is concerned with both the tremendous achievements of contemporary Italy and "the continuities of its history that have not been easily set aside."

Book Recent Social Trends in Italy 1960 1995

Download or read book Recent Social Trends in Italy 1960 1995 written by Alberto Martinelli and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy remains an enigma for many observers. Recent Social Trends in Italy, 1960-1995, the sixth volume from the international Comparative Charting of Social Change program, provides a new and convincing schema for its comprehension. It shows that three essential institutions have structured and unified Italian society: the family, the church, and political parties. While the state remains a weak institution, it is important as a regulator of the economy and of society through the welfare state. The book, which contains a long introduction by Alberto Martinelli on the uneven modernization of Italy, shows the usefulness of analysing social change through study of a series of macro-social trends. These trends range from life-style structures to fertility, leisure, consumption, inequality, religion, and family, among others. This sixth national profile provides more arguements in favour of a hypothesis of diversification, rather than convergence, of modern societies. As Henri Mendras writes in the preface of the book, "The more we change, the more we remain ourselves: that is the conclusion of our comparative research, and the Italian study provides further ample proof of it."

Book The Golden Chain

Download or read book The Golden Chain written by Jürgen Nautz and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family can be viewed as one of the links in a “golden chain” connecting individuals, the private sphere, civil society, and the democratic state; as potentially an important source of energy for social activity; and as the primary institution that socializes and diffuses the values and norms that are of fundamental importance for civil society. Yet much of the literature on civil society pays very little attention to the complex relations between civil society and the family. These two spheres constitute a central element in democratic development and culture and form a counterweight to some of the most distressing aspects of modernity, such as the excessive privatization of home life and the unceasing work-and-spend routines. This volume offers historical perspectives on the role of families and their members in the processes of a liberal and democratic civil society, the question of boundaries and intersections of the private and public domains, and the interventions of state institutions.

Book La famiglia nella societ relazionale

Download or read book La famiglia nella societ relazionale written by Pierpaolo Donati and published by FrancoAngeli. This book was released on 1986 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The New Role Of Women

Download or read book The New Role Of Women written by Hans-peter Blossfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to systematically track postwar changes in family formation in Western Europe and the United States. Cohabitation and motherhood outside of marriage have become more widespread at the same time that women’s social roles are evolving. Women are attaining higher levels of education, marrying at an older age, more frequently working outside the home, and have more reproductive freedom due to new advances in contraception. In this original collection of essays, sociologists and demographers from eight Western European countries and the United States use longitudinal data to compare national variations and explain the connection between the new role of women and family formation in postwar society. The contributors provide a thorough review of the social demographic literature to advance a variety of hypotheses about the relationships between changing women’s education and family formation outcomes, which are empirically examined and compared across countries.
