Los hábitos de lectura y los prejuicios asociados a ellos, las distintas maneras de leer y las distintas satisfacciones —ciertas o ilusorias, desinteresadas o egoístas— que cada cual obtiene de la experiencia, son sometidas a un análisis entusiasta y heterodoxo, que consigue exponer con humor, amenidad y brillantez, sin el oscurantismo terminológico, la idea primordial de que «cualquiera que sea el valor de la literatura, éste sólo se verifica cuando hay buenos lectores que la leen». El lector al que todo le parece «lento», el que busca «verdades» sobre la vida, o el que lee tan sólo para darse un baño de prestigio son algunos de los modelos a los que pasa revista este ensayo, imprescindible para todo aquel que ame los libros y aún hoy novedoso y singular.
