Or is it a smokescreen that hides the vestiges of ethnocentric ideologies, which ultimately create a hegemonic relationship? This book takes a critical look at revival exercises of special historical and geopolitical significance, and argues that a critical and cautious approach to revival movements is necessary. The cases of Sinhala, Kazakh, Mongolian, Catalan, and even Hong Kong Cantonese show that it is not through linguistic revival, but rather through political representation and economic development, that the peoples in question achieve competitiveness and equality amongst their neighbors. On the other hand, linguistic revival in these and other contexts can, and has been, used to support nationalist or ethnocentric agendas, to the detriment of other groups, recreating the same dynamics that generated the argument for revival in the first place. This book argues that respect for linguistic and other diversity, multilingualism and multiculturalism, is not compatible with linguistic revival that mirrors nation-building and essentializing identity construction.

The Day that changed the World in the United States (bombing of the Twin Towers), the Day of Fate in Germany and the Day of Destiny in Israel are all connected with the 11th day of the 9th month. These 9/11 dates entail much more than three events in three countries. In the Hebrew tradition, they include all the calamities that have befallen the Jews from the time of the Destruction of the First Temple and Second Temple, the Expulsion of the Jews from England, France, Spain through to the Holocaust in World War II. These events are, in turn, part of a larger history, which linked the same date with cosmic events such as a day of Cosmic Battle and the Birth of Venus and gave special significance to the numbers 9 and 11. Part one explores this tradition and surveys a range of sources from a former German officer involved in the plot against Hitler, to various conspiracy theories. These events are also related to swastikas and hexagrams. Since World War II there has been a trend to associate swastikas with an evil, German Aryan tradition and hexagrams (e.g. six-pointed Star of David) with a good, Jewish Semitic tradition. Historically, a Jewish connection with the Star of David is late Mediaeval rather than Biblical. Swastikas and hexagrams are found in both the Aryan and the Semitic tradition. Hence, the new trend distorts a complex history. More disturbingly, in the guise of tolerance and political correctness, one version of stories is highlighted, others are being suppressed and truth is endangered.

In Of Remixology, David Gunkel argues that to understand remix, we need to change the terms of the debate. The two sides of the remix controversy, Gunkel contends, share certain underlying values—originality, innovation, artistic integrity. And each side seeks to protect these values from the threat that is represented by the other. In reevaluating these shared philosophical assumptions, Gunkel not only provides a new way to understand remix, he also offers an innovative theory of moral and aesthetic value for the twenty-first century. In a section called “Premix,” Gunkel examines the terminology of remix (including “collage,” “sample,” “bootleg,” and “mashup”) and its material preconditions, the technology of recording. In “Remix,” he takes on the distinction between original and copy; makes a case for repetition; and considers the question of authorship in a world of seemingly endless recompiled and repurposed content.
