Book excerpt: Esta pequeña obra parte de la crisis de respetabilidad en que se encuentra inmersa la cultura jurídica y de la sacudida que ha producido el llamado “proceso de Bolonia”. El discurso de los profesores parece no interesar a nadie, y poco más se puede decir del derecho mismo como marco de convivencia y solución de conflictos. Por el bien del Estado de Derecho es necesario recolocar todo en su lugar, y asumir la importancia, para todos, del Derecho y de su estudio profundo. Además, hay que asumir una realidad que propende a resolver los problemas pasando por encima del derecho, a la vez que se propagan toda suerte de vulgaridades sobre cuál es su función. La utilidad del trabajo de los juristas ha de enfrentarse con la multiplicación de Facultades de Derecho a las que acuden estudiantes con escasa vocación y poca o nula disposición para el estudio de ciencias sociales y humanísticas, renuentes a la lectura y solo interesados por los llamados contenidos prácticos. A su vez se encuentran con buenos enseñantes desmotivados, y también con docentes de cuestionable nivel. Se ha producido una convergencia perversa de dos procesos: la progresiva reducción de los contenidos que se enseñan y la disminución de las condiciones para acceder al profesorado hasta alcanzar la inconfesa meta de muchos: un sistema que prescinda de cualquier prueba pública de control de la calidad, llevando al paroxismo lo que ya eran males conocidos, como el tribalismo y el localismo. El aldabonazo del proceso Bolonia ha recrudecido el eterno debate sobre lo que se ha de enseñar, cómo, cuánto y en qué orden; pero no se está traduciendo en ninguna clase de autocrítica, y las incógnitas dan fuerza a un pesimismo cada vez más justificado. La malparada ciencia del derecho tendrá que luchar por recuperar el papel y la función que su importancia tiene para la convivencia en una sociedad avanzada.

Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach
