Book excerpt: El libro que el lector tiene en las manos analiza las dinámicas de la edición y la puesta en circulación del cuento colombiano en soporte de libro durante el siglo XX, mediante el examen de un conjunto de once editoriales de iniciativa privada. El interés por el cuento tiene que ver, por un lado, con el tránsito entre diversas materialidades, las cuales han determinado la factura de este tipo singular de narración. Por otro lado, hasta hace poco más de una década, este género no había recibido la justa atención por parte de los historiadores de la literatura colombiana, quienes tradicionalmente se habían decantado por la novela y la poesía. Los capítulos siguen el orden cronológico de aparición de las editoriales estudiadas, lo que permite presentar de manera general la evolución de la edición de literatura en el país y revisar en particular el lugar del cuento en este devenir editorial. Con este enfoque, inédito en el campo académico colombiano, se quiere aportar a dos ámbitos: al de los estudios editoriales, al brindar por primera vez una reconstrucción de la historia de varias editoriales colombianas, y al de los estudios literarios, al plantear la edición como una instancia fundamental en la configuración del valor literario, que no suele tenerse en cuenta en las investigaciones o estudios sobre la literatura.

Book excerpt: Por su contribución al desarrollo y establecimiento de la industria editorial en Colombia, los catálogos de Ediciones Espiral, Tercer Mundo y Editorial Norma permiten hacer un sumario de la transformación del espacio editorial durante la segunda mitad del siglo XXy principios del siglo XXI, y son hitos de la historia editorial en Colombia. El estudio comparativo de las estrategias editoriales de estas empresas da cuenta de la evolución del sistema literario colombiano. Esta obra muestra cómo han sido los procesos de selección, producción, circulación y recepción de literatura; quiénes han sido los agentes vinculados con dichos procesos (editores, escritores, traductores y críticos), y cuáles han sido las dinámicas de la actividad editorial en relación con lo literario. Se reconstruye el catálogo de Ediciones Espiral, descubriendo el valor de este proyecto, dirigido por Clemente Airó, al promocionar a jóvenes escritores nacionales en un contexto poco favorable para desarrollar una política editorial de este tipo. Se delimita el trabajo de Tercer Mundo, con una apuesta por las colecciones de narrativa colombiana dentro un mercado más diversificado y nuevos públicos lectores. Se hace un acercamiento a las políticas de traducción y publicación en cinco colecciones del Grupo Editorial Norma en un mercado editorial internacional. Y, finalmente, se presenta una lectura transversal de las políticas editoriales de los cuatro proyectos, donde se destacan puntos de encuentro y desencuentro a lo largo de los más de sesenta años abordados.

Asimismo, el texto indaga sobre algunos aspectos relacionados con la producción e impresión de libros, las ferias y la comercialización, los derechos de autor, las instituciones alrededor del libro y de la lectura, entre otros, que permiten entender cómo se fue creando un sistema cultural en torno a la producción, la circulación y la recepción del libro literario. Desde esta perspectiva, a partir de una robusta revisión bibliográfica y del análisis de los propios catálogos editoriales, se advierte un recorrido en muchos sentidos inédito sobre los procesos de institucionalización y desarrollo de la literatura en Colombia en el siglo pasado.

Book excerpt: La preocupación por la carencia de una crítica académica especializada que tuviera en cuenta criterios afines al género cuento y que deslindara sus peculiaridades narrativas con respecto a la novela, nos llevaron a crear el curso Cuento Colombiano Siglo XX, para estudiantes del pregrado en Literatura del Departamento de Humanidades y Literatura de la Universidad de los Andes; a partir de entonces comenzó a despertarse el interés por la investigación de archivos en hemeroteca y el deseo de profundizar en la manera como la crítica se había aproximado al cuento colombiano y al problema central de la recepción. Tropezamos muy pronto con obras difíciles de conseguir, tirajes cortos y ediciones poco profesionales, con una crítica dispersa, anecdótica, regida muchas veces por sectarismos políticos o religiosos que soslayaban lo literario, y con comentarios esquemáticos sobre obras importantes, como la de Hernando Téllez o Tomás Carrasquilla, que nos llevaron a indagar el posible nexo entre ficción y violencia, en el primer caso, o a replantear el concepto de regionalismo con que se solía simplificar la importancia del escritor antioqueño.
