La concurrence permet d'identifier certaines formes de la discrimination et peut expliquer sa persistance. Le premier chapitre propose une revue de la littérature développant les recherches concernant les liens entre concurrence et discrimination. Les chapitres suivants sont les contributions de l'auteur à ce champ de l'économie. La concurrence est abordée sous deux angles différents. Le premier aborde l'impact de la concurrence sur le marché du travail sur la discrimination. A partir d'un modèle de concurrence spatiale, le chapitre montre que les entreprises non discriminantes profitent de la présence d'entreprises discriminantes. Le second angle concerne la concurrence sur le marché des biens. Le secteur de la grande distribution permet d'étudier son impact sur les différentes facettes de l'emploi. Le quatrième chapitre utilise une expérimentation pour évaluer l'impact de la concurrence dans ce secteur sur la discrimination à l'embauche. Une testing montre que la concurrence n'a pas d'impact significatif sur l'embauche. Le cinquième chapitre utilise les chocs négatifs de concurrence dans le secteur pour étudier son effet sur le partage des rentes entre les salariés. Il montre une discrimination envers les femmes au niveau des salaires. Enfin, le troisième chapitre lie ces deux approches, en comparant les secteurs public et privé. Les différentiels de salaires sont significatifs lorsque l'accent est mis sur leur nationalité d’origine et monter une certaine similitude entre les deux secteurs.

It examines the mechanisms and characteristics of systemic discrimination and the shortcomings of complaint-based laws. Yet these characteristics can also inform employers and government authorities of the kinds of preventive action that help alleviate systemic discrimination at the workplace. In its search for a rational government policy response to systemic discrimination, the book evaluates selected legal regimes which impose proactive obligations on employers to promote equality at the workplace. Proactive regimes are regulatory in nature, rather than adjudicatory. They induce employer compliance through technical assistance, dialogue and regulatory pressure, rather than court orders. By examining the key elements of these regimes the author explains why some proactive regimes function better than others, and why proactive regimes function better than complaint-based laws in addressing systemic discrimination.
