Book 1000 Great Everyday Wines

Download or read book 1000 Great Everyday Wines written by DK and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a time when it is possible to enjoy excellent wine without spending a fortune. Whatever your preferred style, there is superb value to be found if you know what to look for. This new guide to the best everyday wines tells you everything you need to know for buying and enjoying wine at an affordable price, meaning you need never overspend on an average bottle again. When we say "everyday wines", we are talking about wines from the great wineries of the world that cost much less than those properties' flagship wines. Wines that a person of above average income could conceivably afford to drink two-to-three times per week. These should be wines with personality, definitely more sophisticated and authentic than, say Two-Buck Chuck or a generic Merlot from Languedoc. They should show regional characters, be labeled perhaps Haut Medoc and not Bordeaux, Monterrey County and not California, Barossa Valley rather than general Southeast Australia, etc. First and foremost, this book contains lots and lots of recommendations. A new generation of wine writers from around the world have looked in detail at the region(s) they know best and between them have picked out over a thousand superb, yet affordable, wines in every style. For most entries, a bottle or label image appears alongside the text to make it quick and easy to spot these recommended wines on a crowded liquor store or supermarket shelf. Beyond these listings of wines and producers is a wealth of information to expand your knowledge and understanding of the world of wine. A series of feature spreads looks at the most significant varietals, explaining their particular characteristics, detailing where the best Old and New World examples come from, and suggesting foods they work well with. A further series of features focuses on the enjoyment of wine, dispensing practical advice on how to get the most from the experience: subjects include hosting a wine tasting, storing wine, and navigating the wine list in a restaurant. Compiled with as much care and attention to detail as any book on fine wine, 1,000 Great Everyday Wines is the only choice for the budding wine enthusiast who cares about getting great value for money.

Book Crossroads

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr Debra D Andrist
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2019-11-14
  • ISBN : 178284645X
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Crossroads written by Dr Debra D Andrist and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossroads! Intersections physical and/or metaphorical demand processes of consideration, determination, decision and commitment. Stasis is no longer an option where convergence is poised before the unknown. Where categories such as gender, culture, ethnicity, socio-economic status, philosophy and religion clash, the multivariate process can reach such complexity that literary, sociological and psychological tools can have differing interpretations. Real-life intersections range from the mundane (choosing among food items on a menu according to taste preferences) to survival-determinants (evaluating the efficacy of various medical procedures). But such intersections are at the two ends of a very long continuum that takes in issues of form/function, and traditional vs.modern. For example, Home may be defined both as a physical place and/or a mental construct. In more esoteric contexts, artists chiefly known for visual production, representing their ideas with color and form, not infrequently cross media to paint with words. Philosophy, religion, art and literature cross paths via symbols and other visual and linguistic constructs. Writers deal with how and where their own or their characters multiple identities intersect. The Hispanic world is an extraordinarily vivid place to explore these crossroads. This collection of essays addresses a multitude of crossroads in numerous Hispanic contexts across the intersections of time & space/tradition & modernity. The contexts are wide-ranging; e.g., the visual, architectural: how Spains age-old oenological tradition meets modern technology, how the vestiges of long-term dictatorship lurk in the spaces of Spains democracy; and how space/architecture, and art/poetry cross in Latin America. Painters Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlos productions cross the visual to the written; and magical realism products of the twentieth century Latin American artistic movement defy nature, science, time and space.

Book Sustenance for the Body Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr Debra D Andrist
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2021-10-27
  • ISBN : 1782847383
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Sustenance for the Body Soul written by Dr Debra D Andrist and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food-secure and/or privileged worldwide no longer eat and drink simply to maintain life itself. They have the advantage and choice to regard "sustenance" not just as fuel for the body/machine but as a source of pleasure and entertainment for the mind/intellect. This enhanced concept of "sustenance" embraces all the senses: visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile, thus including not just food & drink but ceremonies & art forms dealing with them. This book explores the substantive ways food & drink impact human existence. The work comprises five parts: medicine; ceremonies; literature & cinema; art & artists; space/architecture & advertising/art. Food & drink start with the physical, morph into nutrition, the most basic requirements for organic life, but progress from the beginning of physical process to ceremony and expression. The result and the experience highlight physiological and sensual concepts, and indeed, preference. Food & drink staples are determined by geographic availability and cuisine & beverage are closely associated with culture & ethnicity. Contributor exploration is wide-ranging: Aztec, Mexican & Spanish medicine; African & Roman Catholic rites; cookbook discourse and socio-gender influence; literature, including cultural comparisons of cooking and cooks; preparation & representation of food & drink as artistic endeavours, including by Latin American women, and types of inspirational "fodder", especially in the context of Picasso's art in Spain & France, & Spanish wine museums & labelling. Sustenance for the Body & Soul is the seventh book in the Hispanic Worlds series, details of which are available on the press website.
