In these years the stability of the transport world was shaken by the effect of automobile competition upon the railways' near monopoly. A republican tradition based on fear of monopoloy and protection of local facilities had emerged in the era when rail was king. In the 1930s and 1940s transport policy became a tug of war between supporters of this tradition and those who felt that a new approach was needed to cope with competition, economic depression, and war. Legislative proposals led to heated discussion as railway companies, car manufacturers, truckers, oil companies, small business, local authorities, and trade unions fought to defend their interests. Dr Jones's study of these conflicts, based uopn extensive archival research, illustrates the tension between state planning economic liberalism wihch has been the central issue in economic policy in twentieth-century France.

Les analyses sont menées sur des données d'enquêtes auprès des ménages français. L'équipement automobile des ménages est appréhendé par les méthodes d'analyse des données. Après avoir situé la motorisation en France dans le contexte européen, un traitement original des données d'enquêtes françaises est proposé. Ce traitement consiste en une analyse factorielle discriminante des ménages face à la motorisation. L'analyse permet de déterminer les variables sociodémographiques qui distinguent les différentes catégories de ménages en fonction de leur motorisation. L'analyse de la demande automobile concerne les différents segments issus de la différenciation verticale des produits. Une comparaison de la répartition des demandes en Europe pour ces segments est proposée. L'existence de tendances à la convergence est recherchée à partir d'outils économétriques simples. L'application des méthodes de choix discrets permet d'évaluer l'impact des variables sociodémographiques des ménages sur les choix de segments des véhicules en France. Les données permettent de traiter à la fois le choix de segment dans le cas de véhicules neufs et d'occasion. Les impacts sur la répartition des demandes d'un viellissement de la population, de l'accroissement de la taille des ménages et de variations de revenus par segment sont évalués.
