Book De Ortu Grammaticae

Download or read book De Ortu Grammaticae written by Geoffrey L. Bursill-Hall and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Danish scholar Jan Pinborg (1937-1982) made outstanding contributions to our understanding of medieval language study. The papers in this volume clearly demonstrate the wealth of Pinborg's scholarly interests and the extent of his influence.Though centered on medieval theories of grammar and language, the collection ranges in time from the fourth century B.C. to the seventeenth century A.D.; theories of the pronoun, of mental language, of supposition, of figurative expressions and of mereology are among the topics discussed; and the papers deal with both humble anonymous teachers of grammar and with such well-known men as Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Peter of Spain, Roger Bacon, Robert Kilwardby, Thomas Aquinas, Dante, William of Ockham, Domingo de Soto, and Suárez. The papers are in English, German, or French.

Book Petri Thomae Quaestiones de esse intelligibili

Download or read book Petri Thomae Quaestiones de esse intelligibili written by Garrett R. Smith and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First critical edition of Petrus Thomae’s theory of non-causal dependence This work of Scotist metaphysics is an investigation into the ultimate constitution of things. In the course of this treatise, Petrus Thomae examines whether the essences of things ultimately depend on being thought of by God for their very intelligibility or whether they have it of themselves. Defending in detail the second option, Peter argues that creatures exist independently of the divine intellect in the divine essence. They enjoy real, eternal being in the divine essence and objective being in the divine mind. Aware that these views conflicted with his belief in the Christian doctrine of creation, Peter laboured to alleviate the conflict with a theory of non-causal dependence, according to which even if God did not cause creatures to be in the divine essence, nevertheless they are necessary correlatives of the divine essence.

Book Human Impacts on Ancient Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Human Impacts on Ancient Marine Ecosystems written by Torben C. Rick and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological data now show that relatively intense human adaptations to coastal environments developed much earlier than once believed—more than 125,000 years ago. With our oceans and marine fisheries currently in a state of crisis, coastal archaeological sites contain a wealth of data that can shed light on the history of human exploitation of marine ecosystems. In eleven case studies from the Americas, Pacific Islands, North Sea, Caribbean, Europe, and Africa, leading researchers working in coastal areas around the world cover diverse marine ecosystems, reaching into deep history to discover how humans interacted with and impacted these aquatic environments and shedding new light on our understanding of contemporary environmental problems.
