Book Scales of Governance and Indigenous Peoples Rights

Download or read book Scales of Governance and Indigenous Peoples Rights written by Irene Bellier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the complicated power relations surrounding the recognition and implementation of Indigenous Peoples’ rights at multiple scales. The adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007 was heralded as the beginning of a new era for Indigenous Peoples’ participation in global governance bodies, as well as for the realization of their rights – in particular, the right to self-determination. These rights are defined and agreed upon internationally, but must be enacted at regional, national, and local scales. Can the global movement to promote Indigenous Peoples’ rights change the experience of communities at the local level? Or are the concepts that it mobilizes, around rights and political tools, essentially a discourse circulating internationally, relatively disconnected from practical situations? Are the categories and processes associated with Indigenous Peoples simply an extension of colonial categories and processes, or do they challenge existing norms and structures? This collection draws together the works of anthropologists, political scientists, and legal scholars to address such questions. Examining the legal, historical, political, economic, and cultural dimensions of the Indigenous Peoples' rights movement, at global, regional, national, and local levels, the chapters present a series of case studies that reveal the complex power relations that inform the ongoing struggles of Indigenous Peoples to secure their human rights. The book will be of interest to social scientists and legal scholars studying Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and international human rights movements in general.

Book Multimedia Research and Documentation of Oral Genres in Africa

Download or read book Multimedia Research and Documentation of Oral Genres in Africa written by Daniela Merolla and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches a central concern of oral literature studies worldwide, with a special focus on Africa: how to deal with oral genres in a world where new technologies have become available to more and more people? As the book asserts, what is new is that the spotlight is directed towards (old and new) "interlocutors" who cooperate in the making of technologized oral genres in an increasingly technologized world. Their interactions affect the performance, as well as research - their roles and positions raise methodological and ethical questions particularly when local/national identities and commercial interests are at stake. Book Realizing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Download or read book Realizing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples written by Jackie Hartley and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 13 September 2007, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples affirms the “minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the indigenous peoples of the world.” The Declaration responds to past and ongoing injustices suffered by Indigenous peoples worldwide, and provides a strong foundation for the full recognition of the inherent rights of Indigenous peoples. Despite this, Canada was one of the few countries to oppose the Declaration. With essays from Indigenous leaders, legal scholars and practitioners, state representatives, and representatives from NGOs, contributors discuss the creation of the Declaration and how it can be used to advance human rights internationally.

Book The Universalism of Human Rights

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rainer Arnold
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-08-21
  • ISBN : 9400745109
  • Pages : 435 pages

Download or read book The Universalism of Human Rights written by Rainer Arnold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there universalism of human rights? If so, what are its scope and limits? This book is a doctrinal attempt to define universalism of human rights, as well as its scope and limits. The book presents tests of universalism on international, regional and national constitutional levels. It is maintained that universalism of human rights is both a ‘concept’ and a ‘normative reality’. The normative character of human rights is scrutinized through the study of international and regional agreements as well as national constitutions. As a consequence, limitations of normativity are identified, usually on the international level, and take the form of exceptions, reservations, and interpretations. The book is based on the General and National Reports which were originally presented at the 18th International Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law in Washington D.C. 2010.

Book Canada Nation Branding and Domestic Politics

Download or read book Canada Nation Branding and Domestic Politics written by Richard Nimijean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his Liberal Party’s surprise victory in the 2015 federal Canadian election, Justin Trudeau declared that "Canada was back" on the world stage. This comprehensive volume highlights issues in the relationship between articulated visions of Canada as a global actor, nation branding and domestic politics, noting the dangers of the politicization of the branding of Canada. It also provides the political context for thinking about ‘Brand Canada’ in the Trudeau era. The authors explore the Trudeau government’s embrace of political branding and how it plays out in key areas central to the brand, including: Canada’s relations with Indigenous peoples; social media and digital diplomacy; and the importance of the Arctic region for Canada’s brand, even though it is often ignored by politicians and policymakers. The book asks whether the Trudeau government has lived up to its claim that Canada is back, and highlights the challenges that emerge when governments provide optimistic visions for meaningful transformation, but then do not end up leading meaningful change. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of political science, particularly those with a focus on Canada. It was originally published as a special issue of Canadian Foreign Policy Journal.

This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Legitimacy Clash

Download or read book The Legitimacy Clash written by Alain-G Gagnon and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the coming decade, we may see the advent of multinational federalism on an international scale. As great powers and international organizations become increasingly uncomfortable with the creation of new states, multinational federalism is now an important avenue to explore, and in recent decades, the experiences of Canada and Quebec have had a key influence on the approaches taken to manage national and community diversity around the world. Drawing on comparative scholarship and several key case studies (including Scotland and the United Kingdom, Catalonia and Spain, and the Quebec-Canada dynamic, along with relations between Indigenous peoples and various levels of government), The Legitimacy Clash takes a fresh look at the relationship between majorities and minorities while exploring theoretical advances in both federal studies and contemporary nationalisms. Alain-G. Gagnon critically examines the prospects and potential for a multinational federal state, specifically for nations seeking affirmation in a hostile context. The Legitimacy Clash reflects on the importance of legitimacy over legality in assessing the conflicts of claims.

This book was released on 2003-11-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
