Book excerpt: While the crisis that took place in photojournalism during the 1960's brought about a significant shift in the practices, discourses and institutional structures of press photography, it also affected the practices of artists, specifically with regard to work devoted to revitalizing the depiction of events. The art world attempted to revitalize the historical genre by undertaking its critical rereading, in the spirit of restoring a tradition diminished by the mass media. The problem may be expressed in these terms: How can history be depicted, bearing in mind that the media (mainly photojournalism and the electronic press) have claimed a monopoly of the genre unto themselves? At issue is the sizeable problem of mass media omnipotence as an obligatory referential universe for historiographical artistic practices. Today, it seems impossible to depict the event in any way other than by accentuating or eschewing the formal attributes, rhetorical artifices, and ideological precepts of the mass media. These approaches to addressing historical moments have been examined in this article both because they epitomize contemporary historical writing and, for the most part, they constitute critical responses to stereotyped depictions of events. Above all, they represent a paradigm shift: the mass media's prerogatives for depicting historical moments has shifted towards the field of art. Contemporary depictions of catastrophe - crimes, sensationalist news items, terrorist attacks, humanitarian disasters, genocides - (common themes in many of the artistic projects represented in the 8th edition of the Mois de la Photo a Montreal} have been especially striking in this respect. For of all contemporary events, catastrophes are the most likely to be spontaneously propelled to the top of the news - roster and the most susceptible to the various inflections of contemporary art photography.

Le souci de présenter une image harmonieuse et attrayante du territoire impose toutefois une régulation de plus en plus rigoureuse des expressions culturelles qui s’incarnent dans ces manifestations. À travers une comparaison de deux grands festivals (multi-)culturels urbains, le carnaval de Notting Hill et le Défilé de la Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, analysés l’un et l’autre pour la première fois de façon approfondie dans le cadre d’une enquête de terrain étalée sur près de 5 ans, ce livre entend comprendre les facteurs qui ont présidé à la transformation de certains mouvements culturels urbains comme le hip-hop ou les Sound systems en ressources pour le développement économique local. Mobilisées au service des politiques urbaines, célébrées dans le cadre de fêtes spectaculaires, ces expressions culturelles sont progressivement soumises aux critiques du champ artistique, en même temps que l’artiste professionnel est appelé à devenir un « modèle » susceptible de contribuer à la « modernisation » des cultures minoritaires, à leur « ouverture » et leur « connection » à d’autres univers culturels. Un processus jugé indispensable à l’insertion des minorités ethniques dans les logiques de développement privilégiées par les nouvelles élites urbaines. De ce point de vue, le principal intérêt de cette recherche est de montrer que si la promotion de ces carnavals et autres défilés participe bien d’un (re-)modelage des expressions culturelles minoritaires, ces politiques vont bien au-delà de la simple mise en scène d’une ville créative et cosmopolite : elles affectent directement les manières d’être et de faire ensemble dans le sens d’une « mise au travail » des potentialités culturelles des minorités ethniques.

In doing so, it finds craft activities to be positioned between or across the arts, heritage, notions of a bohemian lifestyle and the challenges of micro-entrepreneurship. By engaging with the contradictions and fragility of sustaining a craft practice, the chapters in this book contribute to different perspectives for entrepreneurship studies. The contributions to this volume illustrate the craft entrepreneurs’ identity, motivation and sense of creative purpose through their craft, as these collide with the tensions brought about through entrepreneurship.
