A long, long time ago in the ancient land of Anahuac, in the great city founded by Tenochtitlan over seven centuries ago, is a small street now called Calle de la Cruz Verde, or the Green Cross Street. The house with the green cross on it stands at the corner of the Calle de la Cruz Verdeand the Calle de Migueles. It was a fine house in the days after Do¤a Mar¡a's father built it. It is told that a gentleman, Don Alvaro de Villadiego y Manrique, came to Mexico in the train of the Viceroy Don Gast¢n de Peralta, who arrived in Mexico City in September 1566. It happened that one day he was out riding his Arabian and came prancing down the Calle de Migueles. In the balcony of a corner house he saw a very beautiful young lady, who was most genteel in her appearance and as white as snow. He instantly fell in love with her and she with him, although she was too well mannered to show it. At that moment, he resolved to marry her. But young love does not always run easy and true especially when there are cultural differences. What happened to Don Alvaro and Do¤a Mar¡a? Was their love for one another fulfilled or did events conspire to keep them apart? Also, what is the background to the creation of the Green Cross? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out for yourself! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980 El Salvador was plunged into a bloody civil war, and Luis Campos, a peasant farmer, found himself drawn into a deadly political maelstrom of guerrilla fighting for twelve years. In this collection of fascinating and revealing oral histories, Gorkin and Pineda portray the personal and social lives of Luis and his family, who for the past eighteen years have been working to rebuild their lives in their new community beneath the Guazapa volcano. Luis, his mother, his wife, his in-laws, his children, and some neighbors recall in a simple and often eloquent manner their experiences of everyday life before, during, and after the civil war. Nina Bonafacia, Luis’s mother, tells of the days before the war when two of her daughters were murdered and she fled with her family to a refugee camp. Julia, Luis’s wife, recounts her life as a guerrillera during which, incidentally, she gave birth to the first two of her eight children. Joaquin, a neighbor and comrade-in-arms, discusses how he and others took control of the land of Comunidad Guazapa and began rebuilding in those turbulent days and months right after the war. Margarita and Francisco, the two oldest children, with candor and insight discuss the trajectory of their lives and that of the postwar generation. And at the center of all these stories stands Luis, the guerrillero, farmer, neighbor, husband, father—and raconteur par excellence. In sum, the multiple voices in From Beneath the Volcano combine to form a rich tapestry displaying a story of war, family, and community and provide a never-before-seen view of both the past and present El Salvador.

Book excerpt: Ana Ruiz visits the monuments, architecture and archeological remains of early Madrid, tracing its evolution up until the Christian conquest in the late 11th century. This history gives special emphasis to Madrids Moorish origins, while savoring the piquant blend of Celtiberian, Roman and Visigoth elements that give it such a distinctive style. Now the capital of Spain, Madrid was originally founded as a modest fortress intended to protect nearby Toledo. It had just a small military population during the 9th and 10th centuries, as well as the Morería of the early Christian era, yet it evolved into an influential cultural center. The author highlights colorful personalities and shows how, throughout al-Andalus or Moorish Spain, Mayrit was a leader in pottery techniques, agricultural methods and hydraulic engineering. Amply illustrated, the book is a virtual portrait of the city and a virtual walking tour, offering specific information for those who wish to stroll the streets and visit archaeological, architectural and geographical sites that have been preserved. The author closes with etymological theories relating to terms and place-names appearing throughout the book, and provides historical and geographical background.
