La these comble l'absence d'information sur les choix de croissance privilegies des grandes entreprises francaises au cours de cette periode. Il apparait que la croissance externe, malgre son importance relative dans la croissance totale des entreprises reste minoritaire. Cette tendance est confirmee par les deux methodes de mesure employees. Par rapport a la vague precedente de fusions et acquisitions observee en france de 1965 a 1973, periode de croissance economique, on note une augmentation de la part de la croissance externe dans la croissance totale des plus grandes entreprises (36% contre 25% des actifs totaux). La croissance externe apparait etre egalement une strategie employee par les entreprises en periode de crise.
