Book Merchants Companies and Trade

Download or read book Merchants Companies and Trade written by Sushil Chaudhury and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to dispel some of the conventionally-held views surrounding trade between Europe and Asia in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. For instance, through a comparative and comprehensive study of merchant communities, markets and commodities, the individual authors demonstrate that Asian merchants were in no way inferior to Europeans in terms of their commercial operations and business acumen. The book as a whole attempts to view trade between Europe and Asia in its totality and emphasizes similarities rather than differences in the two regions.

Book Orientalism in Early Modern France

Download or read book Orientalism in Early Modern France written by Ina Baghdiantz McCabe and published by Berg. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis I's ties with the Ottoman Empire marked the birth of court-sponsored Orientalism in France. Under Louis XIV, French society was transformed by cross-cultural contacts with the Ottomans, India, Persia, China, Siam and the Americas. The consumption of silk, cotton cloth, spices, coffee, tea, china, gems, flowers and other luxury goods transformed daily life and gave rise to a new discourse about the 'Orient' which in turn shaped ideas about economy and politics, specifically absolutism and the monarchy. An original account of the ancient regime, this book highlights France's use of the exotic and analyzes French discourse about Islam and the 'Orient'.

  • Author : Catherine Manning
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • ISBN : 1351936107
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Fortunes faire written by Catherine Manning and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the French in India has received far less scholarly attention than that of other European nations; English historiography, in particular, has often treated it as no more than a preliminary to the extension of British power. In addition, work hitherto has tended to focus on the trade with Europe, not the Asian trade - the 'country trade' carried on within Asia; the full importance of this trade for the Dutch and British is now being recognised. This book represents the first sustained study of French activities in Asian trade, and fills this gap in the historiography. Catherine Manning is concerned to relate the French traders to their social, regional and financial roots, and to trace their connections with other commercial groups in India, both European and Asian. The French evidence that she assembles, including much archival material, also makes a significant contibution to the debate about economic decline and renewal in 18th-century India. Her analysis stresses the importance of the Indian context, and shows that economic and political developments in South India were crucial to the French move from trade to war in the 1740s. Finally the book examines why the French failed in an enterprise which was to succeed so signally for the British only a few decades later.

Book Colbert Mercantilism and the French Quest for Asian Trade

Download or read book Colbert Mercantilism and the French Quest for Asian Trade written by Glenn Joseph Ames and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of French trade with Asia analyzes France's attempt to establish a mercantile empire in the East by breaking into the lucrative market of the Indian Ocean. Between 1664 and 1674, France advanced a vigorous strategy of commerce and colonization. It founded the powerful East India Company and constructed a large royal fleet as the principal instrument for entrenching French power in Asia. Drawing on archival sources, Ames offers a new interpretation of France's mercantilism in the context of the rise of the world market economy of the early modern period. This study sheds new light on the reign of Louis XIV, the mercantilist theories of Colbert, the origins of the Dutch War, and the Asian trading empires of the French, Dutch, English, and Portuguese during the late seventeenth century.

Book The French East India Company and the Trade of the Indian Ocean

Download or read book The French East India Company and the Trade of the Indian Ocean written by Indrani Ray and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The present edition of the writings of the late Indrani Ray has been planned around certain identifiable factors that determined India's changing tryst with the Indian Ocean in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While the protagonist in these writings is the Indian merchant, the biographer is the French East India Company's Official. Using a wide array of French sources, the author reconstructed the changing world of the Indian merchant as he rubbed shoulders with the European trading companies in the palmy decades of the seventeenth century and retreated into his shell in the turbulent decades of the eighteenth. Taken together, these essays underscore both the prosperity and vitality of Indian trade in the seventeenth century as well as its inherent fragility in the face of political uncertainty and unrestrained competition in the succeeding years. The conclusions arrived at, tend to reinforce some of the better known propositions about the nature and orientation of pre-modern Indian trade and the making of its material context. Individually, the essays constitute important interventions in ongoing debates about the extent and logic of Mughal decline, the benevolence of the Mughal state towards matters maritime and about the relative importance of European trade vis-à-vis Asian trade in the economy of eighteenth century Bengal. The Introduction attempts to identify these interventions and knit the essays around the current debates on the eighteenth century crisis in Indian history. The introduction, will help to situate the relevance of the French connection in the complex trading grid of the Indian Ocean. The fact that the French were the most serious rivals of the English for empire and very nearly succeeded in the imperial game is often obscured in the flush of English victories. In terms of the historiography on maritime India, this has meant a subtle neglect of French language sources in the reconstruction of the trading world of the Indian merchant and seafarer. That this omission is entirely unwarranted is amply borne out by Indrani Ray's analysis of French archival sources and documents like the Roques' manuscript, which in terms of both range and detail is of enduring value.
