Download or read book Dionysus and Rome written by Fiachra Mac Góráin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most work on Dionysus is based on Greek sources, this collection of essays examines the god’s Roman and Italian manifestations. Nine contributions address Bacchus’ appearance at the crossroads of Greek and Roman cultures, tracing continuities and differences between literary and archaeological sources for the god. The essays offer coverage of Dionysus in Roman art, Italian epigraphy; Latin poetry including epic, drama and elegy; and prose, including historiography, rhetorical and Christian discourse. The introduction offers an overview of the presence of Dionysus in Italy from the archaic to the imperial periods, identifying the main scholarly trends, with treatment of key Dionysian episodes in Roman history and literature. Individual chapters address the reception of Euripides’ Bacchae across Greek and Roman literature from Athens to Byzantium; Dionysus in Roman art of the archaic and Augustan periods; the god’s relationship with Fufluns and Liber in the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE; Dionysian associations; Bacchus in Cicero; Ovid’s Tristia 5.3; Bacchus in the writings of Christian Latin writers. The collection sheds light on a relatively understudied aspect of Dionysus, and will stimulate further research in this area.
Download or read book Aircraft Carrier Impero written by Davide F. Jabes and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1941, Italy had been developing a top-secret project to install guided rocket weapons aboard aircraft carriers. Campini Capron s revolutionary guided rocket weapon, the DAAC, which would later become Hitler s Henschel HS-117 Schmetterling ( Butterfly ), was the selected projectile. Classified intelligence on the V-1 flying bomb and other aircraft projects were acquired and then discarded when Ansaldo s naval architect, Lino Campagnoli (1911 1975), issued plans for the Impero battleship to be transformed into a modern fleet carrier. Previously unpublished documentation reveals how the last of the four state-of-the-art Littorio-class battleships, which was in advanced completion (hull components and engines installed), was destined for conversion into a modern aircraft carrier. This is an exhaustive historical review of the Impero and Regia Marina s (Royal Navy) developments as well as the dramatic story of the lack of co-operation and strategic insight with Regia Aeronautica before and during the war (1922-1943). Also, a final evaluation of the revolutionary Pugliese anti-torpedo system, based on unpublished German and Russian documentation, is assessed.

Book excerpt: Today many books appear regarding Vatican II. Yet, only very few of them manage to locate this crucial event in the life of the twentieth century Roman Catholic Church against the broad horizon of both its prehistory and its aftermath. This book does just that. In seven chapters, this volume offers a survey of the evolution of Post-Enlightenment Catholicism, in the period spanning from ca. 1830 to the present, tying together the renewals proposed by the first and the Second Vatican Councils. Each phase in this evolution is discussed from a double angle: on the hand from the viewpoint of theological developments and milieu’s, and on the other hand from an institutional and Church historical perspective, thus binding together these two perspectives and tracing the evolutions within Catholicism in all their pluriformity.
Download or read book Luther s Reform written by Jared Wicks SJ and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of the Roman Catholic scholars of the Reformation who have contributed to our understanding of Martin Luther and his theology, Jared Wicks is among the very best. In this reprinted collection of essays a new generation of readers will glean fresh insights into the Wittenberg reformer, as Wicks places Luther within his proper late-medieval theological context and carefully teases out his unique contributions to understanding the church and justification (conversion). At the same time, Wicks situates Luther's theology within present conversations between Lutherans and Roman Catholics and proves again and again the important role that good, fair-minded historiography plays in aiding such dialogue. This collection will treat readers to, among other things, in-depth investigations of Luther's early theology of justification, of the connection between the sacraments and faith, and of the pastoral consequences for the simul iustus et peccator--all written in a winsome prose with careful attention to the original sources. It is a helpful addition to the library of anyone interested in understanding the now 500-year-old movement of reform within the church catholic and its implications for today." Download or read book The Church and Her Scriptures written by Catherine Brown Tkacz and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nearly two millennia since the resurrection of Jesus, can coherence be found within the ways Christians of different ethnicities have approached the Bible? How does one seek guidance in understanding the Scriptures and then draw on that experience to understand oneself and the world? In The Church and Her Scriptures the ancient diversity of Greek, Latin, and Syriac speaks through, for instance, Gregory of Nyssa, Augustine of Hippo, and Jacob of Serugh. The witness and voices of women as recorded in the Book of Daniel and the Gospels themselves are examined. Reanimated through ancient sources, the daily prayer life and holy death of Macrina the Younger, philosopher of God, attest the contemplative power of the laity. The Psalms, so interwoven in her life, prove to be vitalizing for Christians. Their example inspired new psalms in the Epistles. Typology recurred, fed by Jesus's teaching, and this mode of exegesis and key examples of it are likewise respected in this volume. Limning the framework for all this is Patrick Hartin's magisterial essay on Dei Verbum, the Vatican II document on the Bible.

Success in overcoming racism has been achieved from time to time, but victories have been limited thus far because mankind has focused on personal economic gain or power grabs ignoring generosity of the soul.
