Book Music and Temple Ritual in South India

Download or read book Music and Temple Ritual in South India written by William Tallotte and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and Temple Ritual in South India: Performing for Śiva documents the musical practices of the periya mēḷam, a South Indian instrumental ensemble of professional musicians who perform during the rituals and festivals of high-caste (Brahmanical) Tamil Hindu temples dedicated to the Pan-Indian god Śiva – an important patron of music since at least the tenth century. It explores the ways in which music and ritual are mutually constitutive, illuminating the cultural logics whereby performing and listening are integral to the kinetic, sensory and affective experiences that enable, shape and stimulate ritual communication in present-day devotional Hinduism. More than a rich and vivid ethnographic description of a local tradition, the book also develops a comprehensive and original analytical model, in which music is understood as both a situated and creative activity, and where the fluid relationship between humans and non-humans, in this case divine beings, is truly taken into consideration.

Book Subaltern Urbanisation in India

Download or read book Subaltern Urbanisation in India written by Eric Denis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume decentres the view of urbanisation in India from large agglomerations towards smaller urban settlements. It presents the outcomes of original research conducted over three years on subaltern processes of urbanization. The volume is organised in four sections. A first one deals with urbanisation dynamics and systems of cities with chapters on the new census towns, demographic and economic trajectories of cities and employment transformation. The interrelations of land transformation, social and cultural changes form the topic of the “land, society, belonging” section based on ethnographic work in various parts of India (Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu). A third section focuses on public policies, governance and urban services with a set of macro-analysis based papers and specific case studies. Understanding the nature of production and innovation in non-metropolitan contexts closes this volume. Finally, though focused on India, this research raises larger questions with regard to the study of urbanisation and development worldwide.

Download or read book The Camphor Flame written by C. J. Fuller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Hinduism is shaped, above all, by worship of a multitude of powerful divine beings--a superabundance indicated by the proverbial total of 330 million gods and goddesses. The fluid relationship between these beings and humans is a central theme of this rich and accessible study of popular Hinduism in the context of the society of contemporary India. Lucidly organized and skillfully written, The Camphor Flame brings clarity to an immensely complicated subject. C. J. Fuller combines ethnographic case studies with comparative anthropological analysis and draws on textual and historical scholarship as well. The book's new afterword brings the study up-to-date by examining the relationship between popular Hinduism and contemporary Hindu nationalism.

Book The Renewal of the Priesthood

Download or read book The Renewal of the Priesthood written by C. J. Fuller and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has changed for the priests at the Minakshi Temple, one of the most famous Hindu temples in India. In The Renewal of the Priesthood, C. J. Fuller traces their improving fortunes over the past 25 years. This fluidly written book is unique in showing that traditionalism and modernity are actually reinforcing each other among these priests, a process in which the state has played a crucial role. Since the mid-1980s, growing urban affluence has seen more people spend more money on rituals in the Minakshi Temple, which is in the southern city of Madurai. The priests have thus become better-off, and some have also found new earnings opportunities in temples as far away as America. During the same period, due partly to growing Hindu nationalism in India, the Tamilnadu state government's religious policies have become more favorable toward Hinduism and Brahman temple priests. More priests' sons now study in religious schools where they learn authoritative Sanskrit ritual texts by heart, and overall educational standards have markedly improved. Fuller shows that the priests have become more "professional" and modern-minded while also insisting on the legitimacy of tradition. He concludes by critiquing the analysis of modernity and tradition in social science. In showing how the priests are authentic representatives of modern India, this book tells a story whose significance extends far beyond the confines of the Minakshi Temple itself.

Book The Everyday Politics of Labour

Download or read book The Everyday Politics of Labour written by Geert de Neve and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following increased integration in global economic networks, some of India's informal sectors have expanded drastically in recent decades and are employing an increasing number of the country's working population. This book presents a powerful critique of the simplified representations that portray workers' politics in this informal sector as marked by low levels of class consciousness, limited abilities for resistance, and ruled by 'primordial' relations of caste, kinship and patronage. This study will be of interest to students of economy, politics, sociology and social anthropology as well as scholars of development studies.

Book Oases and Globalization

Download or read book Oases and Globalization written by Emilie Lavie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference work about the study of oases in the context of globalization. It is based on selected papers presented at the international colloquium entitled Oases in the Globalization, Ruptures and Continuities in Paris (December 16-17th, 2013). The main issue was to understand how oases have been excluded from or included into the process of globalization. In this context, the present book proposes firstly a discussion about the definition(s) of oasis and secondly several case studies analysing socio-spatial mutations in the oasis structure. The third part deals with the compelling globalization at different spatial scales, using two entries: the water management and local impacts of external control.

Book Tiruvannamalai un lieu saint iva te du sud de l Inde La configuration sociologique du temple hindou

Download or read book Tiruvannamalai un lieu saint iva te du sud de l Inde La configuration sociologique du temple hindou written by Marie Louise Reiniche and published by Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient. This book was released on 1989 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
