Only a unified country for just over 150 years, Italian national identity is perhaps more contingent than longer established nations such as France or the UK. The book investigates when, how and why the discussions about national identity and about immigration became entwined in public discourse within Italy. In particular it looks at the most influential voices in the debate on immigration and identity, namely Italian intellectuals, the Catholic Church, the Northern League and the Left. The methodological approach is based on a systematic discourse analysis of official documents, interviews, statements and speeches by representatives of the political actors involved. In the process, the author demonstrates that a 'normalisation' of intolerance towards foreigners has become institutionalised at the heart of the Italian state. This work will be of particular interest to students of Italian Politics, Nationalism and Comparative Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the experiences of Black women in Italy from the 1970s to the 1990s. Although Italy is still perceived as a recent immigration country, the book demonstrates how Black women were among the first groups of new migrants to the country. Black women migrating to Italy were employed almost exclusively as live-in domestic workers and detailed attention is paid to the history and political organization of this sector. Unlike much published work in Italian, this book adopts an integrated form of analysis where gender, ethnicity and class are seen to be interconnected constructs. The book also situates Black women within the framework of the national constituency of gender. This approach challenges the ideology surrounding the Italian family and demonstrates that while live-in domestic work created specific forms of social marginality for Black women, it paradoxically allowed Italian women to express their new social identities within and outside the family. The book concludes that Italian women have largely failed in their attempts to transform the division of labour within the home and that the decision to employ other (migrant) women to fulfill household tasks is a trend which sits uneasily within the framework of an inclusive feminist project for women.

The analysis builds on the understanding of socio-cultural, institutional and legal factors as “barriers” or “enablers”; elements that may facilitate or obstruct the integration processes. The book examines the two dimensions of integration being access to the labour market (which, translated into a rights language means the right to work) with its corollaries (recognition of qualifications, vocational training, etc.), and non-discriminatory working conditions (which, translated into a rights language means right to both formal and substantial equality) and its corollaries of benefits and duties deriving from joining the labour market. It thereby offers a novel approach to labour market integration and migration/asylum issues given its focus on legal aspects, which includes most recent policy changes and legal decisions (including litigation cases). The robust, evidence-based and comparative research illustrated in the book provides academics and students, but also practitioners and policy makers, with up to date knowledge that will likely impact positively on policy changes needed to better address integration conundrums.

This book examines the protection of family life and family reunification within the framework of international conventions on human rights, family reunification and the protection of family life in the area of justice, the rights of family members of European citizens in the EU legislation and the case law; the rules set by the Directives 2004/38/EC and 2003/86/EC, the relationship between EU legislation on family reunification and the respect of national rules governing the entry and residence of migrants. An important part of this work is dedicated to the right of family reunification in the national law, namely to protect the family unit in Italy in accordance with the Consolidated immigration no. 296/98.

In examining the interactions between bullying and discrimination, the authors set out from the premise that the current practice of intercultural education does not systematically address the issue of bullying, as evidenced by the lack, within schools, of intercultural education projects. The starting point for the work is a survey conducted in ten European countries on a sample of about 9,000 students including immigrants and natives. The research provides important information on which factors deserve special attention when formulating interventions in the classroom with the aim of preventing or combating discriminatory bullying. If intercultural education is called upon to handle the fight against any form of discrimination, it cannot shirk from addressing the issue of bullying discrimination. The results represent a sound, stimulating basis for broad and realistic reflections on discriminatory bullying and intercultural education, and show that intercultural pedagogy needs to be appropriately equipped theoretically. This book will be an indispensable tool for those seeking a thorough understanding of the new challenges facing intercultural education and the means of overcoming them. Based on extensive data collected in Italy, it explores the role that alliances among pro-immigrant groups play in shaping political participation, asking why and how immigrant activists mobilize in hostile environments, why and how they create alliances with some white allies rather than others, and what might explain variations in forms of political participation and grassroots mobilization at the local level. Using social movement, critical race, and post-colonial theories, the author examines the ways in which both institutional and non-institutional actors, including immigrant activists, become involved and compete in the local arena over immigration and integration issues, and assesses the mechanisms by which both conventional and non-conventional forms of participation are made possible, or obstructed. By placing immigrant activists at the center of the analysis, the book offers a valuable and novel insider perspective on political activism and the claims-making of marginalized groups.
