Book excerpt: Born to a Gothic social order, branded a haunter of men's dreams, Vedette is traumatized when her small town in the magical wetlands of southern Spain's Guadalquivir River is overrun by hashish-smoking anarchists promising free love and a life without sadness to those who would follow them. Entranced by their flamenco music, their philosophy of revenge, and the concrete ability to deliver political results, the young woman joins a movement destined to annihilation and becomes its sole survivor, burdened with the task of keeping its memory and project for a better world alive through conversations with their flamenco shadows. Transcending political viewpoints, Mr. Siciliano opens a new chapter in the understanding of the Spanish Civil War, opting for a literary interpretation that looks beyond right and wrong to more universal lessons only the passage of decades and the healing effects of time can reveal.

Book Los dobles

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. T. A. Hoffman
  • Publisher : Libros del Zorzal
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 9875992623
  • Pages : 106 pages

Download or read book Los dobles written by E. T. A. Hoffman and published by Libros del Zorzal. This book was released on 2021 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Gay and Lesbian Themes in Latin American Writing

Download or read book Gay and Lesbian Themes in Latin American Writing written by David William Foster and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A taboo subject in many cultures, homosexuality has been traditionally repressed in Latin America, both as a way of life and as a subject for literature. Yet numerous writers have attempted to break the cultural silence surrounding homosexuality, using various strategies to overtly or covertly discuss lesbian and gay themes. In this study, David William Foster examines more than two dozen texts that deal with gay and lesbian topics, drawing from them significant insights into the relationship between homosexuality and society in different Latin American countries and time periods. Foster's study includes works both sympathetic and antagonistic to homosexuality, showing the range of opinion on this topic. The preponderance of his examples come from Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, countries with historically active gay communities, although he also includes material on other countries. Noteworthy among the authors covered are Reinaldo Arenas, Adolfo Caminha, Isaac Chocrón, José Donoso, Sylvia Molloy, Alejandra Pizarnik, and Luis Zapata. David William Foster is Regents' Professor of Spanish at Arizona State University.

Download or read book Gender and Diplomacy written by Roberta Anderson and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2021-04-16 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book series "Diplomatica" of the Don Juan Archiv Wien researches cultural aspects of diplomacy and diplomatic history up to the nineteenth century. This second volume of the series features the proceedings of the Don Juan Archiv's symposium organized in March 2016 in cooperation with the University of Vienna and Stvdivm fÆsvlancm to discuss the topic of gender from a diplomatic-historical perspective, addressing questions of where women and men were positioned in the diplomacy of the early modern world. Gender might not always be the first topic that comes to mind when discussing international relations, but it has a considerable bearing on diplomatic issues. Scholars have not left this field of research unexplored, with a widening corpus of texts discussing modern diplomacy and gender. Women appear regularly in diplomatic contexts. As for the early modern world, ambassadorial positions were monopolized by men, yet women could and did perform diplomatic roles, both officially and unofficially. This is where the main focus of this volume lies. It features sixteen contributions in the following four "acts": Women as Diplomatic Actors, The Diplomacy of Queens, The Birth of the Ambassadress, and Stages for Male Diplomacy. Contributions are by Wolfram Aichinger | Roberta Anderson | Annalisa Biagianti | Osman Nihat Bişgin | John Condren | Camille Desenclos | Ekaterina Domnina | David García Cueto | María Concepción Gutiérrez Redondo | Armando Fabio Ivaldi | Rocío Martínez López | Laura Mesotten | Laura Oliván Santaliestra | Tracey A. Sowerby | Luis Tercero Casado | Pia Wallnig

Book Las mujeres y la pera

Download or read book Las mujeres y la pera written by Hélène Seydoux and published by Editorial Almuzara. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Death and the Doctor

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Bucknell University Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780838753699
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Death and the Doctor written by and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents three versions of the Godfather/Death motif in English translations as well as the original Spanish. A desperate man makes a pact with Death in order to alleviate pain or sorrow or poverty. Death then makes him a doctor and endows him with the ability to predict life or death, and thus he feathers his nest and his fortune turns. In the end, however, Death demands its pound of flesh, and the day of reckoning arrives." "The three authors of these Death-and-the-Doctor tales are three of nineteenth-century Spain's most well-known short-story writers. Fernan Caballero [Cecilia Bohl de Faber] (1796-1877) first published "Juan Holgado y la muerte [Juan Holgado and Death]" in 1850. It stands out for its humor, relating Fernan Caballero's hapless paterfamilias attempt to escape his numerous children in order to feast on a rabbit, only to have Death, in the shape of an old woman, snatch it from his hands." "Antonio de Trueba (1819-89) first published "Tragaldabas [Glutton]" in 1867. The main characteristic of Trueba's piece is its satire and scathing portrayal, as well as condemnation, of the medical profession." ""Death's Friend" is much more ambitious than Fernan Caballero's and Trueba's tales, and in length approaches a short novel. It is essentially a love story: Gil Gil and Elena, ill-starred lovers, are reunited through divine intervention as both Elena and Death petition God on Gil Gil's behalf." "Taken together, these three Death-and-the-Doctor tales fill a void in the Godfather/Death motif of Western European literature and highlight the universality of Spain's folk tradition."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
