This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightenment, Creativity and Education: polities, politics, performances presents some outcomes of the 24th Conference of the Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE), held in Uppsala, in summer 2010. Bringing together studies related to knowledge and educational policies, the volume deals with the role of knowledge, globalisation and new trends what have an effect of identities and policies. Changes in societies have changed the rhetoric concerning the position and function of education. What – in comparative perspective – are the historical forces and sociological and economic structures which are infl uencing our ideas and assumptions about identity and wisdom and the future of polities and economies? So the conference asked: what are the contemporary and emergent nature of polities, and the politics of the future – and who says so? This publication is structured along three themes for the purpose of giving illustrations to some of the questions asked. The themes are I. Comparative Education – The role of Knowledge and Educational Research, II. Globalisation and New Trends, III. New Knowledge – Identities – Policies. Lennart Wikander is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at Uppsala University. His fi eld is Higher Education including its relations to the labour market. Educational policies in a comparative perspective have also been a major part of his lecturing and research. He is President of NOCIES (Nordic Comparative and International Education Society). He is also member of the CESE Executive Committee. Christina Gustafsson is Professor of Education at Uppsala University and Director of Research in Educational Science at the University of Gävle. She started as a classroom researcher, and spent some years working on evaluation as a research practice. For the past fi fteen years, she has been oriented towards higher education research, especially research related to teacher training and newly qualifi ed teachers. Ulla Riis is Professor of Education at Uppsala University and Director of the programme Studies in Higher Education (SHE) at the Department of Education. Download or read book Language Testing Migration and Citizenship written by Guus Extra and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is required to achieve civic integration and citizenship in nation states across the world? Should language testing be a part of it? This book addresses the urgent need to develop a fuller conceptual and theoretical basis for language testing than is currently available, to enable widespread discussion of this theme and the concomitant linguistic and cultural requirements. The policy proposals for civic integration have so far been conducted almost entirely at a national level, and with little regard for the experiences of a countries with long traditions of migration, such as the USA, Canada, the UK or Australia. At the same time, EU enlargment and the ongoing rise in the rate of migration into and across Europe suggest that these issues will continue to grow in importance. This book raises the level of discussion to take account of international developments and to promote a more coherent and soundly based debate. It will appeal to researchers and academics working in sociolinguistics and language education, as well as those working on language policy.
Download or read book Urban Growth and the Circular Economy written by S. Syngellakis and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented at the 1st International Conference on Urban Growth and the Circular Economy that was held in Alicante, Spain the papers included in this book focus on the continuing and rapid growth of cities and their regions of influence and how that has led to the need to find new solutions which allow for promoting their sustainable development. The quest for the Sustainable City has until recently focused on the efficient use of resources with the application of technical advances giving rise to the definition of SMART Cities. The economic model emphasised however is still “linear” in the sense that the design and consumption follows the pattern of extraction of natural resources, manufacturing, product usage and waste disposal. The continuous growth of urban population has recently given rise to the emergence of a new model which responds better to the challenges of natural resource depletion as well as waste management. This model has been called the “circular economy”. The circular economy is a recent concept based on the reuse of what up to now has been considered wastes, reintroducing them into the productive cycle. The objective of the circular economy is to reduce consumption and achieve savings in terms of raw materials, water and energy, thus contributing to the preservation of resources in order to reach sustainable development. One of the most important of these resources is water which is becoming a scarce commodity in an ever expanding world whose population demands a better standard of living. Water is required for agricultural purposes as well as by industry, in addition to its use by the general population. The recycling of water is an essential component of the circular economy. There is no possibility for the success of a long term economic policy without addressing the problems of natural resources and environmental pollution, which will affect the reuse of materials and products. The current market economy based on a linear model from resource extraction, manufacturing, consumption and waste disposal, has not proved a long term suitable solution, in spite of the substantial efforts made in reducing its environmental impacts. This is largely due to the continuous population growth, in a society that demands high standards of living, thus requiring an ever increasing share of natural resources.
Download or read book Content and Language Integrated Learning in Spanish and Japanese Contexts written by Keiko Tsuchiya and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book compiles pedagogical practices and studies of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) from two sites: Spain, where CLIL has been widely implemented for more than a decade, and Japan, where the CLIL approach is still in its relative infancy, and quickly gaining momentum. Focusing on three aspects of the CLIL implementations: policy, practice and pedagogy, the authors describe how CLIL has evolved in distinctive socio-political, historical and cultural contexts. The chapters range across primary, secondary and tertiary education, and examine English language teaching and learning at both the macro level - through language education policy - and the micro level - with a focus on classroom interaction and pedagogy. This book fills a gap in the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) literature, and will be of particular interest to language teachers, teacher trainers, and students and scholars of applied linguistics more broadly.
Download or read book CLIL in Spain written by David Lasagabaster and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book makes a significant and very timely contribution to furthering professional understanding of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The first part brings together the outcomes of CLIL implementation initiatives in different educational sectors in Spain which reflect regional possibilities and priorities. The second part takes a critical look at a variety of teacher education models, both in-service and pre-service. Linking classroom initiatives with teacher education underlines the importance of addressing this often neglected or ignored area. Quite simply, without appropriate teacher education programs, the full potential of CLIL is unlikely to be realised and the approach would be unsustainable. This publication provides the reader with practical suggestions and raises issues for further reflection. The contributors have embraced the ‘educational challenge’ and, in doing so, have made a significant contribution to disseminating CLIL practice across Europe and further afield by raising issues and questions which need to be addressed through future class-based inquiry and scientific research. The collection of case studies is also a celebration of the hard work, endeavour and constant drive by practitioners, teacher educators and researchers to give our young people the best linguistically-rich learning experiences they can possibly have throughout their schooling and further studies.” —Professor Do Coyle, University of Aberdeen

Download or read book Teaching Literature and Language Through Multimodal Texts written by Domínguez Romero, Elena and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, there has been a growing interest in the benefits of linking the learning of a foreign language to the study of its literature. However, the incorporation of literary texts into language curriculum is not easy to tackle. As a result, it is vital to explore the latest developments in text-based teaching in which language, culture, and literature are taught as a continuum. Teaching Literature and Language Through Multimodal Texts provides innovative insights into multiple language teaching modalities for the teaching of language through literature in the context of primary, secondary, and higher education. It covers a wide range of good practice and innovative ideas and offers insights on the impact of such practice on learners, with the intention to inspire other teachers to reconsider their own teaching practices. It is a vital reference source for educators, professionals, school administrators, researchers, and practitioners interested in teaching literature and language through multimodal texts.
