Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How has social psychology investigated the concept of change? In this chapter, we try to answer this question by moving in two directions. First, we briefly consider the main lines of research described in some of the reference books on social psychology, and the contributions of leading scholars who studied change (i.e. the great names in its history, cf. Lubek, 1993). Second, we analyze the abstracts of the papers published in two journals of pivotal importance in this field since their inception, i.e. the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and the European Journal of Social Psychology. In line with recent developments in digital methods, the distant reading of large corpora of scientific literature can serve as a valid counterpart to more traditional ways of pursuing a historical quest like the one we posit here (Tuzzi, 2018)"--

Book The Routledge Handbook of Political Campaigning

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Political Campaigning written by Darren Lilleker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Political Campaigning provides an essential, global, and timely overview of current realities, as well as anticipating the trajectory and evolution of campaigning in the coming years. Offering a comprehensive analysis, the handbook is structured into seven thematic sections, including the campaign environment; rhetoric and persuasion; campaign strategies; campaign tactics and platform affordances; news and journalism; citizens and voters; and civil society. The chapters within each section reflect on the latest societal, technological, and cultural developments and their impact on campaigning, on democratic culture within societies, and on the roles that campaigns might play in both facilitating and impeding political engagement. Key trends and innovations are examined alongside case studies and examples from a range of nations and political contexts. Issues around trust and representation are further reflected in a focus on the wider campaigning environment and the rise in importance of grassroots and pressure groups, social movements, and movements that coalesce within digital environments. The Routledge Handbook of Political Campaigning is an essential resource for scholars, students, and practitioners in political communication, media and communication, elections and voting behavior, digital media, journalism, social movements, strategic communication, social media, and more broadly to democracy, sociology, and public policy.

Book Communication and Social Change

Download or read book Communication and Social Change written by Thomas Tufte and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the communication practices of governments, NGOs and social movements enhance opportunities for citizen-led change? In this incisive book, Thomas Tufte makes a call for a fundamental rethinking of what it takes to enable citizens’ voices, participation and power in processes of social change. Drawing on examples ranging from the Indignados movement in Spain to media activists in Brazil, from rural community workers in Malawi to UNICEF’s global outreach programmes, he presents cutting-edge debates about the role of media and communication in enhancing social change. He offers both new and contested ideas of approaching social change from below, and highlights the need for institutions – governments and civil society organizations alike – to be in sync with their constituencies. Communication and Social Change provides essential insights to students and scholars of media and communications, as well as anyone concerned with the practices and processes that lead to citizenship, democracy and social justice.

Book Youth Power in Precarious Times

Download or read book Youth Power in Precarious Times written by Melissa Brough and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does youth participation hold the potential to change entrenched systems of power and to reshape civic life? In Youth Power in Precarious Times Melissa Brough examines how the city of Medellín, Colombia, offers a model of civic transformation forged in the wake of violence and repression. She responds to a pressing contradiction in the world at large, where youth political participation has become a means of commodifying digital culture amid the ongoing disenfranchisement of youth globally. Brough focuses on how young people's civic participation online and in the streets in Medellín was central to the city's transformation from having the world's highest homicide rates in the early 1990s to being known for its urban renaissance by the 2010s. Seeking to distinguish commercialized digital interactions from genuine political participation, Brough uses Medellín's experiences with youth participation—ranging from digital citizenship initiatives to the voices of community media to the beats of hip-hop culture—to show how young people can be at the forefront of fostering ecologies of artistic and grassroots engagement in order to reshape civic life.
