Book Through the Door Cuentos de Casa

Download or read book Through the Door Cuentos de Casa written by Flora Gamez Grateron and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we go about our daily lives, we create stories, weave poems, make magical moments, at times without realizing it. Some moments in time are worth revisiting while others are better left unexplored. However, those could be the ones that need further scrutiny and may hide deeper, more important themes in life. Our stories are like peering through an old-fashioned kaleidoscope, reflecting images of bits of colored glass constantly shifting, changing, creating new designs and patterns. Our memories are kaleidoscopes. Our stories are kaleidoscopes. Our lives are kaleidoscopes. So, what's your story? Use the prompts after each story or poem to journal your story as you make your way through life. Our journey is not yet over.

Suddenly Joe’s a wanted man. Hunted by a murderous pimp known as Baby Jewels Moses and a relentless homicide cop named Tarzon, Joe ends up taking the rap and getting sentenced to three years. Book Beyond Mud and Vines

Download or read book Beyond Mud and Vines written by Jacqueline Jorgensen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-04-23 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A violent storm dropped Sabina into her mother's bed, according to her sister Emilia, who knew everything just because she was the oldest child in the Montalvo family. As the only child (among eight siblings) with light skin, blond hair, and green eyes born to dark parents, Sabina was constantly told that she was weird and different. Her father insisted that the sun would darken her skin, if he kept her pulling weeds, planting crops, and helping him up on the roof. The sun blistered the top of her head, her nose, and shoulders, and the hot tin-roof burnt the bottom of her feet. Still, Sabina could not complain. If she did, her father, who wore a hat, long sleeves, and shoes, would rap her on the head with his knuckles. Only when a letter came from the school at the top of the mountain did Sabina's father allow her and her sister to attend school. He didn't want the school to send the authorities to investigate, and catch him making rum, which was illegal since the island had become a possession of the United States. Sabina, born with a great thirst for knowledge, excelled quickly. But the school closed for two years, and when it finally reopened, her parents didn't let her return for forth grade. Sabina became a full-time worker on the farm, and endured cruelty from her father, mother, and oldest sister. She trembled near a swollen creek, keeping the fire burning under her father's rum-making apparatus during a raging storm. Through the thick cloud of rain, she saw a family of seven attempt to cross the creek, and one by one get flushed away by the muddy water. She watched, and screamed, but even God couldn't hear her through the roaring thundering storm. Sabina would be punished if she left the apparatus unattended to run home for safety, so she endured. And the next day, she learned that her beloved godfather had also been flushed away by the same creek. Sabina raised a starving baby-goat, which became her beloved pet, until her father had it butchered. It devastated her to see it boiling in her mother's stew. With pain in her heart she vowed to run away from home. But before she could plan her escape, her drunken father held a machete to her throat, forcing her to count fifty-two eggs for the seventh time. She awakened on the slime of broken eggs, and heard her father beating the rest of his family. She jumped out the window, and ran. After hiding all night, she headed down to the river, which she hoped would lead her to a city on the west end of the island. She would make something of herself, and one day come back to rescue her younger sister and brother, the only ones who had never been mean to her.

Download or read book Cocina De La Familia written by Marilyn Tausend and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-12-17 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of more than two hundred treasured family recipes and the stories behind them, Cocina de la Familia is a celebration of Mexican-American home cooking, culture, and family values. For three years, Marilyn Tausend traveled across the United States and Mexico, talking to hundreds of Mexican and Mexican-American cooks. With the help of chef Miguel Ravago, Tausend tells the tale of these cooks, all of whom have adapted the family dishes and traditions they remember to accommodate a life considerably different from the lives of their parents and grandparents. In these pages you will find the real food eaten every day by Mexican-American families, whether they live in cities such as Los Angeles, the border towns of Texas, the farming communities of the Pacific Northwest, or the isolated villages of New Mexico. An Oregonian from Morelos, Mexico, balances sweet, earthy chiles with tart tomatillos for a tangy green salsa that is a perfect topping for Chipotle Crab Enchiladas or Huevos Rancheros. A Chicago woman from Guanajuato pairs light, spicy Chicken and Garbanzo Soup with quesadillas for a simple supper. A Los Angeles cook serves a dish of Chicken with Spicy Prune Sauce, the fire of the chiles tamed by Coca-Cola, and in Illinois a woman adds chocolate to the classic Mexican rice pudding. Now you can re-create the vibrant flavors and rustic textures of this remarkable cuisine in your own kitchen. Most of the recipes are quite simple, and the more complex dishes, like moles and tamales, can be made in stages. So take a savory expedition across borders and generations, and celebrate the spirit and flavor of the Mexican-American table with your own family.
