Book The Christ of the Apocalypse Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Christ of the Apocalypse Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation written by Msgr. A. Robert Nusca and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the Apocalypse of John is a “Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Rev 1:1) is a fact too often overlooked by interpreters of this last book of the Bible. As Msgr. A. Robert Nusca’s The Christ of the Apocalypse: Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation proposes, beyond predictions of earthquakes and falling stars, St. John articulates from start to finish a multifaceted and compelling portrait of Jesus Christ. Nusca offers an exegetical reading of selected verses of the Book of Revelation, incorporating rich spiritual and pastoral reflections. The Christ of the Apocalypse above all affirms that St. John’s God- and Christ-centered, symbolic universe offers our contemporary world a spiritual place to stand amid the shifting sands of postmodernity. As Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, writes in his Foreword, “Now, as in the first century, Christians face martyrdom, and those who are not called to die for Christ are called to live for Christ in a world which in many ways rejects the Gospel. More than ever, we need the apocalyptic vision, to have our own vision of reality clarified, and to be strengthened in our evangelical witness.”

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: The work that follows is not intended to be a commentary on the Apocalypse. There have been many such commentaries, reaching back into the earliest times of the Christian era. Some, especially during the Middle Ages, have been quite spectacular in their ingeniousness. Our modern era has seen a series of fine commentaries, applying all the criteria of a historical-philological analysis to this difficult book...What I have attempted to do here is to provide a continuous reading of the text, trying to show, especially through the links which can be made with the Old Testament tradition, the coherent and unified argument of the whole work...The reader will find that, despite my admiration for and debt to the older commentaries, I have introduced something quite new to the interpretation of the Apocalypse. About the Author: Eugenio Corsini was the professor of Ancient Christian Literature at the University of Turin. He studied at the University of Turin; the Sorbonne, Paris; and the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, and he has a long list of important publications in the area of early Fathers of the Church. About the Translator & Editor: Francis J. Moloney, S.D.B., is an internationally renowned Johannine scholar. He teaches at Salesian Theological College, Australia, and he has lectured extensively.

Book The Humility and Glory of the Lamb

Download or read book The Humility and Glory of the Lamb written by Jeffrey R. Dickson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Apostle John endorses "Lamb" twenty-nine times in his Apocalypse and employs a term that is used only one other time in the New Testament to this end, this unique title and its sophisticated christological implications has only received cursory attention both historically and more recently. Even then, incomplete/monochromatic interpretations of the unique verbiage John employs to describe Christ are reached. After identifying this clearing that exists in the christological forest, this book reaches a robust understanding of Revelation's Lamb by means of a contextual-grammatical-canonical-historical hermeneutic. Ultimately, this monograph concludes that the apostle's use of Lamb throughout his Apocalypse promotes a multifaceted christological presentation of John's protagonist that is dependent on the paradoxical theme of glory in humility--a theme that is introduced when the Lamb first emerges in Revelation 5 and is then reiterated every time the title is used thereafter. In so doing, this work offers students and scholars alike a better understanding of who is coming in the end and what this means for the church at present.

Book Jesus and the Angels

Download or read book Jesus and the Angels written by Peter R. Carrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1997, examines the influence of angelology on the christology of the Apocalypse of John. In the Apocalypse, Jesus appears in glorious form reminiscent of angels in Jewish and Christian literature in the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE. Dr Carrell asks what significance this has for the christology of the Apocalypse. He concludes that by portraying Jesus in such a way that he has the form and function of an angel, and yet is also divine, the Apocalypse both upholds monotheism and at the same time provides a means for Jesus to be presented in visible, glorious form to his Church.

Book Christ Shepherd of the Nations

Download or read book Christ Shepherd of the Nations written by Jon Morales and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does John's Apocalypse envision destruction or salvation for the nations of the world? Scholarly views on this issue range from extreme (total destruction) to extreme (universal salvation). Jon Morales maintains that the question must be reframed to highlight, not only the destiny of the nations, but also their dilemma within the drama of world history. Using narrative methodology, Morales asks four key questions concerning the nations: What is John's story of the nations? How does he tell this story? What is John's message to the nations? And what is his message to the church concerning the nations? Literary characters cannot be understood in the abstract, but must be rather discovered sequentially in the development of an entire narrative. The nations in Revelation are no exception. Understanding that previous studies have neglected to situate the nations within Revelation's larger plot, or in interaction with other narrative characters, Morales concludes that John's purpose is to show that the nations belong to God. John achieves his purpose in part by deploying a novel metaphor, virtually unexplored until now – Christ, shepherd of the nations
