Book La cath drale Sainte Marie Majeure de Marseille dite la Major

Download or read book La cath drale Sainte Marie Majeure de Marseille dite la Major written by Rémy Kerténian and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hello! Marseille, a city in the South of France, needs no introduction. It is remembered for precisely the things it wishes everyone to forget - a tragic history of violence and poverty due no fault of its own. In most of Marseille there are divergent scenes, the chaotic and savage yet beautiful streets and natural landscapes amalgamate in cohesion, into an unparalleled version of France. You will encounter in the first chapter, the beautiful natural landscapes around the Calanques that dot the Mediterranean coastline in the South of France. The second chapter throws a spotlight on a variety of street scenes, a capsule of the essence of the daily lives. These soft, sublime moments are lived surrounded by the romance of the Mediterranean sun and sea. Here, the old and new collide in a sweeping sensation of grandeur and naivete, finding exciting possibilities in cohabiting with each other, where the mistral winds howl along the long Mediterranean coastline and azure waters lap languidly on pebbled beaches. You notice the scent of pine and thyme in windblown gardens of reds and yellows as the city beckons to yet another stranger from a faraway place, whispering, 'Explore me', making you yearn to experience more in this place of contradiction. Experiencing the city, consuming it piece by piece brings forth myriad emotions, a happiness that borders on ecstasy together with an unfathomable obsession, a glimpse of a breathing, living story. Some places seem familiar at first glance, others are delightfully foreign.Your feelings are not completely understood, and should never be. The Marseille that you will encounter tells a story about a journey across the city through the lens of a film camera. The fragile moments of daily life, embracing you with the light touches of a sunny, smiling place you know you will not forget.Step in, and enjoy your small travel adventure, one photo at a time.

Book Marseille a century of pictures

Download or read book Marseille a century of pictures written by Gérard Detaille and published by Editions Parenthèses. This book was released on 1998 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book WHO WAS SAINT LAZARUS written by Elizabeth Cassar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two personages named Lazarus can be identified in the New Testament - one being Lazarus of Bethany; the other Lazarus the Beggar of the parable. The available relevant texts in the New Testament appear to give very little background information about the historical Lazarus. However, much can be gleaned by analysing the available information in the light of historical, archaeological and biblical sources. There is even less known about the historical Lazarus of Bethany after Jesus'' resurrection. The link between leprosy and St. Lazarus further led to the development of cults with associated iconography. The present publication is the result of a Workshop organised by the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. The Workshop was organised with the aim of investigating the personage of the historical Lazarus and to outline the cults that developed around him during the Medieval Period.

Book excerpt: A mysterious French nobleman arrives at Ekaterina Tuomonova's gallery in Chelsea, London. He is in search of an expert in early 20th century Post Impressionist art. Olivier de la Salle proposes John and Ekaterina visit his château in Provence, in the South of France, where he needs help in identifying a collection of paintings long forgotten in the recesses of his château. The story explores the world of art and art dealers with their immensely rich clients, collectors and oligarchs, crooks and forgers, auction houses and museums, the vast sums of money that art attracts today, artists and their friends, their wealth and their misery, their mistresses and their patrons. It is the Belle Epoque, then comes World War I, the Russian Revolution, followed by World War II and the looting by the Nazis of Museums and Jewish families in 1940, and finally the arrival of Russian oligarchs who spend hundreds of millions of dollars to own the works of Picasso, Modigliani and their fellow artists who lived when Paris was the cultural centre of the world at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book completes the story of one of the most formidable defensive lines in Europe in World War II, looking at the lesser known Mediterranean extension and describing how it was conceived of, built and used. After the alarming collapse of Italy in 1943, the Germans launched a crash building program and the 'Sudwall' (South Wall) sprang up quickly along the French Mediterranean coast and the neighbouring Italian coast around Genoa. The new defenses were bolstered by existing French fortifications of key port towns such as Marseilles and Toulon – many of them bristling with heavy artillery. Whilst describing the wall's physical design features, this book also recounts the defenses' role in the Allied invasion of Southern France; Operation Dragoon – 'The Second D-Day'. As the Germans' worst fears became a reality, the southern Atlantic Wall would face its ultimate test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cult of the Modern focuses on nineteenth-century France and Algeria and examines the role that ideas of modernity and modernization played in both national and colonial programs during the years of the Second Empire and the early Third Republic. Gavin Murray-Miller rethinks the subject by examining the idiomatic use of modernity in French cultural and political discourse. The Cult of the Modern argues that the modern French republic is a product of nineteenth-century colonialism rather than a creation of the Enlightenment or the French Revolution. This analysis contests the predominant Parisian and metropolitan contexts that have traditionally framed French modernity studies, noting the important role that colonial Algeria and the administration of Muslim subjects played in shaping understandings of modern identity and governance among nineteenth-century politicians and intellectuals. In synthesizing the narratives of continental France and colonial North Africa, Murray-Miller proposes a new framework for nineteenth-century French political and cultural history, bringing into sharp relief the diverse ways in which the French nation was imagined and represented throughout the country's turbulent postrevolutionary history, as well as the implications for prevailing understandings of France today"--

Book Saints In Rome and Beyond

Download or read book Saints In Rome and Beyond written by Daniel Thelen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within Christian tradition the veneration of relics has happened quite naturally. From the first few moments of Christian history, as the three Marys looked on with surprise upon the empty tomb of Christ, to the most recent martyr, who in their own way suffers and joins him or herself to Christ's passion, the church has always shown a great desire to provide special dignity to the dead and proper veneration and respect for their remains. The Liturgy in a special way unites the most august celebration of the Eucharist with the memorials of the saints. This not only reflects the eternal union that Christ desires for each of us in heaven but it also expresses the incredible love that God has for his creation. This work attempts to tap into this marvelous reality. By focusing primarily upon the saints of the Roman Catholic Liturgical Calendar it is hoped that the pilgrim may in a unique way participate in the Divine Liturgy by visiting the shrines of the saints on their feast days.
