Book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Big Game of Africa Classic Reprint written by Richard Tjader and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of Africa This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who are interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun. For in the many good books on hunting in the Dark Continent, little or nothing has been said that may help the would-be African big game hunter in the selection of the proper outfit, guns, cameras, curing materials, etc., nor do they give him any definite information as to where, when and how to secure the game he wants, and none of them contains the most necessary introduction to the ki-swahili language, even a slight knowledge of which will prove of immense help to the sportsman when hunting in British East Africa, German East Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of my own experiences and observations during three different expeditions to British East Africa, and con tains the most reliable information I was able to obtain from other sportsmen and professional hunters, as well as from the wild sons of that wonderful game country who, themselves, spend most of their lives roaming around among the Big Game of Africa. Book African Rifles and Cartridges

Download or read book African Rifles and Cartridges written by John Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1948 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. John Howard 'Pondoro' Taylor (1904 - 1969) was a big-game hunter of Irish descent. In Africa he experimented extensively using different types of rifles and calibers, which made him an expert in big game rifles. He is credited with developing the 'Taylor KO Factor' and wrote several now classic books. As a professional ivory hunter with some thirty years of continuous living in the African bush, John Taylor used and tested all the various calibers of British, American and German rifles, and with them killed many species of big game found on the continent of Africa. Taylor's discussion on the practical application of ballistics includes doubles, magazines, and single-shots; the practical value of steel-jacketed bullets versus those covered with cupronickel; the faults of copper-tubed bullets; the actual effects of softpoint bullets with varying degrees of lead exposure; the necessity of modern bullets that will really stand up to the requirements when fired into heavy animals; and many other valuable tips and explanations about cartridges and rifles. Remains a classic work.

Book In Brightest Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book In Brightest Africa Classic Reprint written by Carl Ethan Akeley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Brightest Africa Akeley came twenty-seven years ago into the midst of this unequal contest between the flesh and blood of the animal kingdom and the steel and lead of the sportsman, of the food and ivory hunter, and his sympathies were all on the animal side in the fight. If his sympathies had been on the human side he could not be the biographer of the African vanishing world who speaks in the pages of this volume, lost in admiration of the majesty of the elephant, the unchallenged reign of the lion, the beauty and grace of the antelope, the undaunted courage of the buffalo, and, last but not least, of certain splendid qualities in the native African hunter. We know of only one other sculptor who has immor talized the African Negro in bronze; this is Herbert Ward, whose splendid life work is now in the United States National Museum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother of All Living: A Novel of Africa But that was not quite all. There was another message in the reeling miles. Sometimes they spun through the thick forests of wattle plantations, the trees gleaming silver in the sun that filtered between their leaves, and she took in every detail - the piled logs in the clearings, the stripped bark arranged in long rows to dry, the acres of young trees, and the burnt patches of old ones. But there lurked a mystery, it seemed to her, in those lonely plantations. Or again they climbed out on to the hills of a native reserve, and she looked out over the undulating veld, the rounded kopjes and the deep-cut valleys. Little patches of unfenced cultivation clung to the sides of them, and on the crests clustered the brown thatched huts silent and deserted in the sun. She wanted to get out and look in. At school, the girls had listened entranced to her casual references to 'boys' and black folk, but back here the fact that she was living among an alien race who set her standard of conventionalities at defiance, suddenly confronted her as a new thing. Book Babes in the African Wood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Babes in the African Wood Classic Reprint written by Ronald Gorell Barnes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Babes in the African Wood Tms narrative puts forward no claim to be added to the vast number of admirable text books upon big-game hunting already before the public. Hunting necessarily plays a part, but its aim is simpler; it desires merely to take the reader for a summer's camping in one of the newest of British possessions, to share with him, as far as may be, the varied humour, in terest and charm which make up the life, and to offer some small assistance to any who may intend to experience it for themselves. I wish to thank my friend, companion and leader for the great help he has given me in the shape of notes, criticisms and photographs; above all, for his generous permission to make free use in the appendix of his excellent and detailed notes upon outfitting. It will be sufi'i ciently obvious to any who read so far that such value as this may have is due entirely to him, and that the responsibility for all its short comings must be laid upon my shoulders. Book Nyitso a Novel of West Africa Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nyitso a Novel of West Africa It was mid-morning, a bright, cloudless morning, suffused with heat, but a pleasant heat that menaced but never consumed. A pallidly splendid sun moved majestically to the zenith of a pale blue, rain-washed sky, poised above a drenched green earth. Elsewhere, the time of the year was the close of the calendar half-year. Here it was the close of the third season, the third of the five seasons. The rains were drawing to a close. Ahead, on the eastern horizon, lay an opaque haze. It contained a threat which the late afternoon sun might bring to fulfilment, when the wide plains would crouch beneath the sudden onslaught of the rain. But now the plains were at peace and unafraid, glorious, green, sweeping plains, the short grass thick and vigorous. Noisy little watercourses chattered their way in brimming, important threads, forgetful that in the dry season they would shrink and dwindle into nothingness. Here and there were clusters of thorn bushes and twisted euphorbias, dwarfed beside the tall stateliness of borassus palms, foliage spread out luxuriantly against the background of pale sky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great and Small Game of Africa: An Account of the Distribution, Habits, and Natural History of the Sporting Mammals, With Personal Hunting Experiences It is not claimed for this work that it is complete and final. 'africa is not yet fully explored, and although during the last half - century that great continent has yielded up innumerable secrets of zoology, the discoveries of recent years suggest that forms of animal life, at present unknown to science, may still be awaiting the. Naturalist and the hunter in the remoter and still unknown regions of the interior. It may, however, be claimed that, concerning known species, as much information as it is possible to comprise within the limits of one stout volume is to be found within the following pages. This information has been conveyed in a reasonably popular form, and the non-scientific reader should have little difficulty in laying his finger quickly upon the facts of which he may be in search. It should add to the interest of readers to know that the great bulk of the book has been contributed by well - known African sportsmen, who have had intimate personal experience of the animals of which they treat. These experiences have often extended over a space of many years - Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
