Pero la realidad es más compleja y la evolución del personaje del caballero mucho más problemática. Por otra parte, la misma palabra «caballero» es ambigua y más aún lo es la noción de «caballería». Su acepción latina, la militia, designa la fuerza armada al servicio del Estado. Esta función pública, en la Edad Media, se privatizó, y sus caracteres aristocráticos y militares adquirieron un mayor relieve. Su gran impulso procede de la consolidación de la caballería pesada entre los siglos IX y XI. Pero hay que esperar hasta el siglo XII para que la caballería se afiance, con la generalización de la carga a lanza tendida. Entonces se dota de un código deontológico, basado en el honor, que «humanizará», en cierto modo, las «leyes de la guerra». A la vez, la Iglesia trata de asignarle una misión y una ética de acuerdo con su causa. De este modo, en los siglos XI al XIII, se trazan las líneas esenciales de una caballería que va convirtiéndose poco a poco en una cofradía de élite de la nobleza. De todo esto y mucho más habla esta obra admirable, un estudio sobre el tema tan exhaustivo como apasionante, concebido como un libro de historia y escrito casi como una novela, que fascinará por igual tanto a quienes ya sientan interés por el tema como a los curiosos que se acerquen a él por primera vez.

Aunque ambas se hallen insertas en el contexto trifuncional medieval (sacerdotes, combatientes y trabajadores), que configuró la sociedad de aquel tiempo, y estén sujetas al cristianismo que lo definió, el simbolismo de los tres colores (blanco, rojo y negro) que domina la ceremonia de investidura caballeresca narrada en La Orden de Caballería nos remite a un simbolismo precristiano, de supuesto cuño indoeuropeo, que ya no aparece en el posterior Libro de la Orden de Caballería.

There are the elite social circles of European and New World Whites, the rich culture of the free people of color, the class to which Cecilia herself belonged, and then the slaves, divided among themselves between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in the New World, and those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the rich people in Havana. Many images of the Revolution remain iconic to this day—Francisco Villa galloping toward the camera; Villa lolling in the presidential chair next to Emiliano Zapata; and Zapata standing stolidly in charro raiment with a carbine in one hand and the other hand on a sword, to mention only a few. But the identities of those who created the thousands of extant images of the Mexican Revolution, and what their purposes were, remain a huge puzzle because photographers constantly plagiarized each other’s images. In this pathfinding book, acclaimed photography historian John Mraz carries out a monumental analysis of photographs produced during the Mexican Revolution, focusing primarily on those made by Mexicans, in order to discover who took the images and why, to what ends, with what intentions, and for whom. He explores how photographers expressed their commitments visually, what aesthetic strategies they employed, and which identifications and identities they forged. Mraz demonstrates that, contrary to the myth that Agustín Víctor Casasola was “the photographer of the Revolution,” there were many who covered the long civil war, including women. He shows that specific photographers can even be linked to the contending forces and reveals a pattern of commitment that has been little commented upon in previous studies (and completely unexplored in the photography of other revolutions).

Texas, 347 US 475 (1954), the major case involving Mexican Americans and jury selection, published just before Brown v. Board of Education in the 1954 Supreme Court reporter. This landmark case, the first to be tried by Mexican American lawyers before the U.S. Supreme Court, held that Mexican Americans were a discrete group for purposes of applying Equal Protection. Although the case was about discriminatory state jury selection and trial practices, it has been cited for many other civil rights precedents in the intervening 50 years. Even so, it has not been given the prominence it deserves, in part because it lives in the shadow of the more compelling Brown v. Board case. There had been earlier efforts to diversify juries, reaching back at least to the trial of Gregorio Cortez in 1901 and continuing with efforts by the legendary Oscar Zeta Acosta in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Even as recently as 2005 there has been clear evidence that Latino participation in the Texas jury system is still substantially unrepresentative of the growing population. But in a brief and shining moment in 1954, Mexican-American lawyers prevailed in a system that accorded their community no legal status and no respect. Through sheer tenacity, brilliance, and some luck, they showed that it is possible to tilt against windmills and slay the dragon. Edited and with an introduction by University of Houston law scholar Michael A. Olivas, Colored Men and Hombres Aqui is the first full-length book on this case. This volume contains the papers presented at the Hernandez at 50conference which took place in 2004 at the University of Houston Law Center and also contains source materials, trial briefs, and a chronology of the case.
