Literature and Interregnum examines the unraveling of the political forms of modernity through readings of end-of-millennium literary texts by César Aira, Marcelo Cohen, Sergio Chejfec, Diamela Eltit, and Roberto Bolaño. The opening of national spaces to the global capitalist system in the 1980s culminates in the suspension of key principles of modernity, most notably that of political sovereignty. While the neoliberal model subjugates modern forms of social organization and political decision making to an economic rationale, the market is unable to provide a new ordering principle that could fill the empty place formerly occupied by the national figure of the sovereign. The result is a situation that resembles what the Italian political philosopher Antonio Gramsci termed interregnum, an in-between time in which the old [order] is dying and the new cannot be born. The recoding of history as literary form provides occasions for reconsidering modern conceptualizations of aesthetic experience, mood, temporality, thought, politics, ethical experience, as well as of literature itself as social institution. In his analysis, Patrick Dove seeks to create dialogues between literature and theoretical perspectives, including Continental philosophy, political thought, psychoanalysis, and sociology of globalization. The author highlights the connections between mass media, technology, politics, and economics. This is a first-rate, timely, and rigorously theorized intervention that everyone in the field of Latin American literary and cultural studies will have to read, teach, discuss, and cite. In the first full-length study of this commercially successful and intellectually significant genre, Bradbury underlines the service performed by the miscellanists as disseminators of knowledge and information to a popular readership. His comprehensive analysis of the miscelánea corrects long-standing misconceptions, starting from its poorly-understood terminology, and erects divisions between it and other related genres. His work illuminates the relationship between the Golden Age Spanish miscellany and those of the classical world and humanist milieu, and illustrates how the vernacular tradition moved away from these forebears. Bradbury examines in particular the later inclusion of explicitly fictional components, such as poetic compositions and short prose fiction, alongside the vulgarisation of erudite or inaccessible prose material, which was the primary function of the earlier Spanish miscellanies. He tackles the flexibility of the miscelánea as a genre by assessing the conceptual, thematic and formal aspects of such works, and exploring the interaction of these features. As a result, a genre model emerges, through which Golden Age works with fragmentary and non-continuous contents can better be interpreted and classified.

The work is the result of the preaching task carried out by Joan Martí de Figuerola for the conversion of the Mudejars of Zaragoza between 1517 and 1518, a task that brought Figuerola into numerous confrontations with both ecclesiastical and secular authorities in Aragon for disturbing the coexistence between the two confessions. Lumbre de fe also stands out for its use of qur’ānic texts in Arabic to attack Islam. These texts, also transliterated in Latin characters and translated into Spanish, are commented and discussed by Figuerola, making use of his vast theological erudition and his experience as a preacher in the crown of Aragon. The manuscript in which the work is preserved also contains numerous images representing Islamic beliefs and rites, which further reinforces the enormous originality and strength of the work.

Así, este libro es una reafirmación de nuestra fe, expresada de una manera muy sencilla y sin ninguna complicación. Este libro es también un recordatorio para nosotros amar a nuestra Iglesia y defenderla a pesar de que haya muchas cosas que nos puedan provocar desencanto. No debemos desanimarnos; al contrario, debemos estar felices de saber el camino que conduce a la paz y a la salvación. La Iglesia se inició con la traición de Judas, que contribuyó a la cruz de Jesús. Este tipo de hechos seguirán estando presentes en nuestra Iglesia, en nuestras comunidades, e incluso en el comportamiento de nuestros líderes. Pero, si Dios está con nosotros, ¿quién puede estar contra nosotros? Jesús nos ha marcado el camino que debemos seguir si queremos estar con Dios nuestro Padre. Mi libro está escrito en armonía con las enseñanzas de la fe católica y el mensaje va directo al corazón de la persona humana. El contenido del libro nos invita a mantener la fe con el fin de comprender mejor nuestro papel en un mundo lleno de violencia y de secularismo. Hemos llegado a ser violentos no sólo con los demás, sino también con nosotros mismos, al elegir creencias y actitudes que no nos ayudan a convertirnos en personas obedientes, humildes y felices. Muchos hombres y mujeres entran en la Iglesia, pero tienen una interpretación errónea de la fe y de la jerarquía. Ellos no están de acuerdo ni contentos con una cosa ni otra. Piensan que pueden escoger y elegir lo que quieran y como quieran. Sin embargo, es importante entender que la Iglesia no es, y nunca ha sido, una democracia. La Iglesia es jerárquica y encuentra su fundamento en la autoridad que el Señor Jesús recibió del Padre. Con esa autoridad, Él dijo a Pedro: " Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia, y el poder del infierno no la derrotará".
