Book The Social Psychology of Minorities

Download or read book The Social Psychology of Minorities written by and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1978-12-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Us and Them: why do some groups feel superior to others? Why is it that all too often the ‘inferior’ group accepts the evaluation of their status by the ‘superior’ group? What happens when an ‘inferior’ group decides to challenge the ‘superior’ group, and how do they go about it? Can a minority group seek to achieve equal treatment from the majority society but also retain their separate identity? The Social Psychology of Minorities seeks to answer these important questions which are of vital relevance to understanding the social realities of people’s lives and particularly to the mechanics of prejudice and discrimination. Written by Henri Tajfel, former Professor of Social Psychology at Bristol University, this succinct analysis discusses such concepts as the internal and external criteria of a minority group, the effects of social change, and the process and patterns of rejection and acceptance. An important report on a subject which helps to shape the relationship between minority groups and the majority society, The Social Psychology of Minorities will be especially useful to those concerned with social science, education and the achievement of good community relations.

Book Education for Critical Consciousness

Download or read book Education for Critical Consciousness written by Paulo Freire and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous for his advocacy of 'critical pedagogy', Paulo Freire was Latin America's foremost educationalist, a thinker and writer whose work and ideas continue to exert enormous influence in education throughout the world today. Education for Critical Consciousness is the main statement of Freire's revolutionary method of education. It takes the life situation of the learner as its starting point and the raising of consciousness and the overcoming of obstacles as its goals. For Freire, man's striving for his own humanity requires the changing of structures which dehumanize both the oppressor and the oppressed. This edition includes a substantial new introduction by Carlos Alberto Torres, Distinguished Professor and Founding Director of the Paulo Freire Institute, UCLA, USA. Translated by Myra Bergman Ramos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children as Teachers: Theory and Research on Tutoring covers topics on the use of children to tutor other children in school; helping relationships in general; and cross-age interaction by children. The book discusses the basic theoretical and empirical foundations for practical programs; original empirical research relevant to cross-age interaction and the impact of tutoring on both the tutor and the tutee; and a wide range of tutoring programs that operate in the schools. The text also reviews existing research on tutoring by children, as well as research and experience on the advantages and disadvantages of several alternative decisions when establishing a tutoring program in the school. Some of the papers in the book report interesting scientific information on topics having obvious practical implications: social class and ethnic differences in tutoring by young children; teaching by siblings; nonverbal skills and consequences of tutoring for the tutor; and the use of a variety of nonprofessionals as helpers. Educators, social scientists, psychologists, and policy makers will find the book invaluable.

Book The Emergence of Mathematical Meaning

Download or read book The Emergence of Mathematical Meaning written by Paul Cobb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of a five-year collaboration between groups of American and German mathematics educators. The central issue addressed accounting for the messiness and complexity of mathematics learning and teaching as it occurs in classroom situations. The individual chapters are based on the view that psychological and sociological perspectives each tell half of a good story. To unify these concepts requires a combined approach that takes individual students' mathematical activity seriously while simultaneously seeing their activity as necessarily socially situated. Throughout their collaboration, the chapter authors shared a single set of video recordings and transcripts made in an American elementary classroom where instruction was generally compatible with recent reform recommendations. As a consequence, the book is much more than a compendium of loosely related papers. The combined approach taken by the authors draws on interactionism and ethnomethodology. Thus, it constitutes an alternative to Vygotskian and Soviet activity theory approaches. The specific topics discussed in individual chapters include small group collaboration and learning, the teacher's practice and growth, and language, discourse, and argumentation in the mathematics classroom. This collaborative effort is valuable to educators and psychologists interested in situated cognition and the relation between sociocultural processes and individual psychological processes.
