Book excerpt: Taking up the invitation extended by tentative attempts over the past three decades to construct a functioning definition of the genre, Jonathan Bradbury traces the development of the vernacular miscellany in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain and Spanish-America. In the first full-length study of this commercially successful and intellectually significant genre, Bradbury underlines the service performed by the miscellanists as disseminators of knowledge and information to a popular readership. His comprehensive analysis of the miscelánea corrects long-standing misconceptions, starting from its poorly-understood terminology, and erects divisions between it and other related genres. His work illuminates the relationship between the Golden Age Spanish miscellany and those of the classical world and humanist milieu, and illustrates how the vernacular tradition moved away from these forebears. Bradbury examines in particular the later inclusion of explicitly fictional components, such as poetic compositions and short prose fiction, alongside the vulgarisation of erudite or inaccessible prose material, which was the primary function of the earlier Spanish miscellanies. He tackles the flexibility of the miscelánea as a genre by assessing the conceptual, thematic and formal aspects of such works, and exploring the interaction of these features. As a result, a genre model emerges, through which Golden Age works with fragmentary and non-continuous contents can better be interpreted and classified.

In such circumstances, slander may instead empower and reinforce the collective identity of those perceived to be a threat to an idealized society. In this innovative study, Irigoyen-Garcia examines how the discourse and practices of insult and infamy shaped the cultural imagination, anxieties, and fantasies of early modern Spain. Drawing on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literary works, archival research, religious and political literature, and iconographic documents, Dystopias of Infamy traces how the production of insults haunts the imaginary of power, provoking latent anxieties about individual and collective resistance to subjectification. Book excerpt: This book examines the religious and ideological consequences of mass conversion in Iberia, where Jews and Muslims were forcibly converted or expelled at the end of the XVth century and beginning of the XVIth, and in this way it explores the fraught relationship between origins and faith. It treats also of the consequences of coercion on intellectual debates and the production of knowledge, taking into account how integrating new converts from Judaism and Islam stimulated Christian scholars to confront the converts’ sacred texts and created a distinctive peninsular hermeneutics. The book thus assesses the importance of the “Converso problem” in issues such as religious dissidence, dissimulation, and doubt and skepticism while establishing the process by which religious dissidence came to be categorized as heresy and was identified with converts from Judaism and Islam even when Lutheranism was often in the background.

Der argentinische Schriftsteller Jorge Luis Borges gilt als ein Literat, der bereits in seinen Werken der 30er und 40er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts Strukturen geschaffen hat, die später die Postmoderne prägen sollten. Seine Erzählungen sind insbesondere von intertextuellen Bezugnahmen und sich in Paradoxien verstrickende Narrative durchzogen. Die Folge ist ein dezentrierter sowie dialogisierender Text, der keine eindeutige Aussage hervorbringt, sondern in einer vielstimmigen und unabgeschlossenen Textauslegung zur Wirkung kommt. Der Band stellt zur Diskussion, ob ein wesentlicher Grund für Borges’ innovatives, die literarische Postmoderne prägendes Textkonzept darin gesehen werden kann, dass sich der argentinische Schriftsteller nachweislich mit jüdischer Tradition, insbesondere der Schriftkultur, auseinandergesetzt hat. Geht man davon aus, dass die in jüdischer Tradition kultivierte mehrschichtige Textdeutung zugleich einen permanenten, unendlichen Rezeptionsprozess zur Folge hat wird deutlich, dass diese Tradition nicht nur kompatibel zu Borges’ Literatur ist, sondern auch zahlreiche Reflexionen in der modernen Literatur und Literaturforschung angeregt hat.
