Book excerpt: Ivey De'Long is an inquisitive, young boy entering his adolescent years. He lives in Baton Rouge with his mom and dad but spends his summers visiting his grandparents in Middle Creek Bottom, Louisiana. It's the summer of 1919, and he's just arrived, set to explore the swamps of this beautiful land, or, as his French grandmother calls it, "la belle terre." Upon his arrival, Ivey reunites with his best friend G.W., and together they fish the bayous, search for hidden treasure, and make some mischief. All his life, Ivey has been taught people are the same on the inside, regardless of race, so he doesn't understand why townsfolk don't always look fondly on a white boy running around with a poor, black kid in the swamp. In the spirit of To Kill a Mockingbird, young Ivey tells the story of racial tension in the American South and proves that prejudice goes well beyond skin color.

Book excerpt: The history of Port Jefferson, a village on Long Islands North Shore, is rich with the lore of ships and the sea. Once called Drowned Meadow because of flooding at high tide, the town was renamed Port Jefferson in 1836. Those same harbor waters, which overran their banks, would become the natural resource that made Port Jeffersons first industryshipbuildingpossible. By the mid-19th century, the village had become one of the principal shipbuilding centers on Long Island and a major port of entry. The names of many prominent shipbuilding families are preserved in the villages streets and institutions, including Mather, Jones, Bayles, and Hawkins. When the shipbuilding industry declined in the late 1800s, Port Jefferson used its seaside location to reinvent itself as a recreation destination, attracting notables such as Franklin Roosevelt. The communitys heritage is evidenced today in the numerous well-kept historic homes and buildings that stand along the hilly, tree-lined streets overlooking the harbor.

Book Andr Thevet s North America

Download or read book Andr Thevet s North America written by André Thevet and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1986 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: André Thevet was one of the most widely travelled Frenchmen of the sixteenth century, visiting almost all the main countries and regions of western Europe, the Near East, and Brazil. He served four consecutive French kings, beginning with Henry II, as Royal Cosmographer and "garde des singularitez." As cosmographer, he wrote three major books dealing with the discovery and subsequent exploration of the New World: Les Singularitez de la France antarctique (1556), La Cosmographie universelle (1575), and the Grand Insulaire (unpublished, 1586). Although the portions of these works devoted to South America have received considerable attention from scholars, Thevet's work on North America has remained inaccessible to students of the Age of Discovery. Professors Schlesinger and Stabler have now added Thevet to the list of enjoyable books by early European explorers of North America.
