No es, por tanto, una Historia definitiva, pero sí una perspectiva metodológica imprescindible. En ese año de 1912 cuando se inicia uno de los episodios de nuestra Historia, que más tópicos ha producido en el imaginarios histórico hispano: el desastre de Annual, el desembarco de Alhucemas, el mundo de los "africanistas", el servicio militar en Marruecos o el Tercio de extranjeros. La visión de esta etapa sólo podría completarse desde una triple perspectiva: la de los españoles peninsulares, la de los marroquíes y la de quienes vivieron y asumieron ese pequeño territorio bajo aquella singular organización política durante casi medio siglo. La función de la Alta Comisaría del Protectorado, la acción protectora a través de la oficina de intervención, el dispensario médico y la escuela, la figura de los interventores, la organización sanitaria, las instituciones educativas y culturales, las instituciones judiciales y el derecho hispano-marroquí, la Administración Militar y los últimos años del Protectorado, son algunos de los temas que se han abordado en esta obra. Por supuesto que aunque la historia del Protectorado no se agota en estas trece visiones, al menos, los trabajos agrupados en esta obra tratan los aspectos más relevantes de la historia del Protectorado. De hecho, este libro formula interrogantes, propone reflexiones y deja la puerta abierta a nuevas interpretaciones. En definitiva, aún queda trabajo para los historiadores en este campo del Protectorado, que no siempre lo fue de batalla.

In the process, the book challenges over-familiar understandings of Western Orientalism. Beyond Fortuny and Sorolla, many unfamiliar artists and exhibitions are introduced, amongst them Villaamil, whose nostalgic landscapes evoked the loss of Andalusi culture; Bécquer, who celebrated Spanish-Moroccan peace-making through the lens of Velázquez; the Symbolist Rusiñol, whose images of the Alhambra are infused with melancholy; Morcillo, whose extraordinary camp images opened a new space for male subjectivity; Tapiró and Bertuchi, who dedicated their lives to Morocco, and the Moroccan Sarghini, who participated in the state-funded Painters of Africa exhibitions in Franco's Madrid – an annual exhibition that served the colonial concept of a Hispano-Moroccan brotherhood under the dictatorship. This book traces the shifting impulses and meanings of Orientalist expression in Spain. It makes an original intervention in the field of Spanish art studies and contributes new material to the ongoing debates about Western Orientalism.

First, because the policy practiced upon Arabs and Moroccan Imazighen since the French colonization comprised one of the reasonings employed to justify the pro-Arab policies developed after independence. Second, because the discriminatory policy deployed by Spain in Equatorial Guinea, was overridden by the installation of a dictatorship that established a system of Fang predominance. This book clarifies the degree to which the Spanish colonization is responsible for the present-day management of cultural diversity in both countries.
