Download or read book Approximation Theory written by Ole Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concisely written book gives an elementary introduction to a classical area of mathematics—approximation theory—in a way that naturally leads to the modern field of wavelets. The exposition, driven by ideas rather than technical details and proofs, demonstrates the dynamic nature of mathematics and the influence of classical disciplines on many areas of modern mathematics and applications. Key features and topics: * Description of wavelets in words rather than mathematical symbols * Elementary introduction to approximation using polynomials (Weierstrass’ and Taylor’s theorems) * Introduction to infinite series, with emphasis on approximation-theoretic aspects * Introduction to Fourier analysis * Numerous classical, illustrative examples and constructions * Discussion of the role of wavelets in digital signal processing and data compression, such as the FBI’s use of wavelets to store fingerprints * Minimal prerequisites: elementary calculus * Exercises that may be used in undergraduate and graduate courses on infinite series and Fourier series Approximation Theory: From Taylor Polynomials to Wavelets will be an excellent textbook or self-study reference for students and instructors in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. Readers will find motivation and background material pointing toward advanced literature and research topics in pure and applied harmonic analysis and related areas.

Download or read book Mi Cuajara written by Lola M. Laben and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s don’t seem that long ago to many of us. Given how crowded and closely connected the world of the present is, it’s hard to imagine there were places then that had been settled and cultivated for four hundred years but, as recently as the 1980’s, had no electricity, no plumbing, and very little traffic except for horses, donkeys, and (mostly bare) feet. The valley of the Rio Mira in Ecuador was such a place. Jesuit priests brought slaves - including Lola Laben’s ancestors - to farm sugarcane almost four hundred years ago. Slavery was abolished, but the work continued. Agrarian reform came, Lola’s parents became land owners, and the work continued. Lola was born in a mud house identical to the ones her slave ancestors had been born in for generations. She helped her parents farm a little farther downriver in the same manner that her ancestors had farmed. She explored her tropical paradise and wondered about faraway places and listened to the news of the outside world: the world beyond her valley and the city where the train came to and from three times a week. Fate determined that the outside world would find her, and she now resides in the most thoroughly modern and up-to-date nation on the planet. Guess what? Her childhood was full of wonder, beauty, adventure, and freedom even though survival was less certain. This book recounts the world that Lola was born into and how her heritage prepared her to meet the challenges of her future.

This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Orqu deas en acuarela la obra in dita de Rafael Lucas Rodr guez Caballero written by Rafael Lucas Rodríguez-Caballero and published by Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this book, the word note acquires a whole new meaning, as it presents the annotations that Rafael Lucas Rodríguez Caballero, prominent Costa Rican biologist of international renown, made as he studied orchids over the course of several decades. He dissected a broad series of flowers under the microscope, analyzed the diversity of their forms, and presented the results in a technical fashion, with meticulous annotations. But he did this in the form of watercolors, so that examining his notes is to discover a fantastic work of art, in which the specimens acquire life and, often, a three-dimensional aspect. These plates highlight his naturalist's eye and artist's sensibility. Rafael Lucas died without finishing this project, and to date only a fraction of this work has been published. This book presents over 1000 of his unpublished watercolors, with their corresponding annotations. In them, there are data on the variation that occurs within and between species, which is relevant in biology. Also clear are his efforts to identify the plants he studied, an aspect of historical interest. And, after decades of attempts at publishing it, here is the spectacular art of a prodigious student of the fascinating forms of orchids.

This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated, bilingual art book presents drawings by Ramón Casas in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections at the Northwestern University Library and oil paintings by Casas from private collections and the Art Institute of Chicago. Charles Deering and Ramón Casas follows the development and dramatic dissolution of a three-way friendship that connected the Spanish painter Ramón Casas (1866–1932); the Chicago industrialist Charles Deering (1852–1927), who was a collector and admirer of Casas’s work as well as a patron of Northwestern University; and the Spanish artist Miguel Utrillo (1862–1934), Casas’s lifelong friend and the father of the French painter Maurice Utrillo. Casas introduced Deering to Sitges, a beach town near Barcelona, Spain, where the latter created a palatial estate with a museum to house his art collection. Miguel Utrillo served as director of the museum. The text explores the treasures housed at Maricel and what happened among the three men that led Casas to abandon Utrillo and Deering to depart Spain, taking his art collection with him.
