Book Roman Stoicism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Roman Stoicism Routledge Revivals written by Edward Vernon Arnold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman Stoicism, first published in 1911, offers an authoritative introduction to this fascinating chapter in the history of Western philosophy, which throughout the 20th century has been rediscovered and rehabilitated among philosophers, theologians and intellectual historians. Stoicism played a significant part in Roman history via the public figures who were its adherents (Seneca is perhaps the most famous); and, as it became more widely accepted, it assumed the features of a religion. The Stoic approach to physics, the universe, divine providence, ethics, law and humanity are all investigated, as is its diffuse impact upon literature. The origins of Christianity are also examined. Arnold offers a sympathetic reading of St. Paul in light of Stoicism, and regards the latter as the crucial bridge between Antiquity and Christendom: it allowed a swathe of Pagan intellectuals to join the Church and influenced the development of Christian doctrine, thus making an immense contribution to the bedrock of modern European civilisation.

Book Duetting and Turn Taking Patterns of Singing Mammals From Genes to Vocal Plasticity and Beyond

Download or read book Duetting and Turn Taking Patterns of Singing Mammals From Genes to Vocal Plasticity and Beyond written by Patrice Adret and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammalian vocal duets and turn-taking exchanges — long, coordinated acoustic signals exchanged between two individuals— are primarily found in family-living, pair-bonded mammals with a socially monogamous lifestyle (some rodents, some lemurs, tarsiers, titi monkeys, a Mentawai langur, gibbons and siamangs). Duetting and turn-taking patterns combine visual, chemical, tactile and auditory cues to produce some of the most exuberant displays in the realm of animal communication. How and why such phenotypes evolved independently across main lineages are fundamental questions at the core of the nature-nurture debate. Duetting styles ranging from antiphonal (non-overlapping) to simultaneous (overlapping) emissions have now been documented in various taxa, some of which are quite reminiscent of turn-taking rules in human conversation. Nonetheless, much remains to be learned about this complex motor skill, and at all four levels of analysis, namely (1) developmental processes, (2) causal mechanisms (3) functional properties and (4) evolutionary history. Given the strong link between this form of coordinated singing and pair-bonding, gaining a deeper understanding of this kind of cooperative behavior will likely shed more light on the deep evolutionary roots of human culture, language and music.

Book Phase Transformations and Evolution in Materials

Download or read book Phase Transformations and Evolution in Materials written by Patrice E. A. Turchi and published by Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society. This book was released on 2000 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of papers presented at the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, held in Nashville, Tennessee, in March, 2000. The symposium emphasizes both theoretical and experimental aspects of phase transformations and evolutions in materials. Topics addressed in papers include: mechanical properties of structurally heterogeneous systems; simulations of structural transformations; large-scale modelling of microstructure evolution in martensites; applying the concentration wave method to predict ordering phenomena in substitutional alloys and ceramic materials; and use of the phase field method to study coherent transformations.

Book Molecular Mechanisms of Plant and Microbe Coexistence

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms of Plant and Microbe Coexistence written by Chandra Shekhar Nautiyal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Mechanisms of Plant and Microbe Coexistence presents studies on the complex and manifold interactions of plants and microbes at the population, genomics and proteomics level. The role of soil microbial diversity in enhancing plant health and plant microbe beneficial symbioses is discussed. Microbial communities are shown in the light of evolution. Main topics include genome coexistence and the functional genomics and proteomics of plant-associated microbes, which could form the basis for new environmentally benign strategies to combat infectious plant diseases and regulate plant growth. Further chapters focus on the role of signaling during the different stages of plant microbe coexistence, in symbiotic or pathogenic relationships, in quorum sensing and plant viral infections. Methods for studying the interactions in the root zone complement the book, which will certainly be of relevance in the practical application to agriculture, food security and for maintaining the balance of our ecosystems.

Book excerpt: Mutualisms, interactions between two species that benefit both of them, have long captured the public imagination. Their influence transcends levels of biological organization from cells to populations, communities, and ecosystems. Mutualistic symbioses were crucial to the origin of eukaryotic cells, and perhaps to the invasion of land. Mutualisms occur in every terrestrial and aquatic habitat; indeed, ecologists now believe that almost every species on Earth is involved directly or indirectly in one or more of these interactions. Mutualisms are essential to the reproduction and survival of virtually all organisms, as well as to nutrient cycles in ecosystems. Furthermore, the key ecosystem services that mutualists provide mean that they are increasingly being considered as conservation priorities, ironically at the same time as the acute risks to their ecological and evolutionary persistence are increasingly being identified. This volume, the first general work on mutualism to appear in almost thirty years, provides a detailed and conceptually-oriented overview of the subject. Focusing on a range of ecological and evolutionary aspects over different scales (from individual to ecosystem), the chapters in this book provide expert coverage of our current understanding of mutualism whilst highlighting the most important questions that remain to be answered. In bringing together a diverse team of expert contributors, this novel text captures the excitement of a dynamic field that will help to define its future research agenda.
