The most part of the book is devoted to the edition of minuscule 788 (Athens, Nat. Lib. 74), considered by the author as the nearest member to the archetype of the group (f 13). Based on quite new collations for the all extant manuscripts, the edition provides a positive apparatus. L'analyse du texte est accompagnée de notes minutieuses qui précisent les termes, les ambiguïtés grammaticales, les variantes. Ces notes, qui procèdent du grec mais sont, je crois, accessibles à tous, esquissent un vocabulaire biblique. La quête de l'évangile, pour soi et pour autrui, inspire ce commentaire, mais ne cède à aucune complaisance. On trouvera peu de références à la littérature théologique. Selon le vieil adage, la Bible est ici, à elle-même, sa meilleure interprète. Et cette œuvre, peu comparable, y trouve, elle, sa meilleure référence.

Depuis les etudes philologiques des theologiens lutheriens allemands du XIXe siecle, l evangile de Marc est considere comme le plus ancien, certains le datent du debut des annees 70. Papias (eveque d Hierapolis vers 125-130) nous dit qu il fut le porte-parole de Pierre. Marc est appele aussi Jean-Marc dans les Actes des apotres, il participa au debut de la premiere mission de saint Paul et Barnabe. Michel Leturmy, dans l introduction a son evangile (Bible de la Pleiade), nous dit que ce n etait pas un intellectuel. Neanmoins la reference de Papias qui sous-entend que Marc nous livre souvent le temoignage de Pierre, rehausse enormement l interet de son evangile. Selon la tradition, Marc aurait ecrit son evangile a Rome, puis l aurait quittee pour fonder l eglise d Alexandrie. Sa reputation de disciple de Pierre affirmee par Papias et par quelques epitres tardives de Paul semble contredite par les Actes des apotres qui n evoquent nulle part ses relations avec Pierre.
