Book excerpt: After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned—about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have—in this life-changing classic. "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." —Randy Pausch A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave—"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"—wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Book Extravagant Morphology

Download or read book Extravagant Morphology written by Matthias Eitelmann and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking extra-vagans literally (Lat. ‘wandering outside, out of bounds’), this volume comprises nine case studies on extravagant morphology ranging from pattern-extending derivational processes via theory-challenging compounding processes to interface-straddling morphosyntactic phenomena. As a heuristic approach, morphological extravagance captures word-formation processes characterised by constraint violations, interface phenomena as well as borderline phenomena not easily reconcilable with traditional postulates of morphological accounts. In this regard, the notion of extravagance allows for an exploration of rule-bending language use both empirically and theoretically. The volume makes a valuable contribution to studies on morphological variation, which has only recently seen a renewed and growing interest in morphological phenomena that challenge morphological frameworks. The volume is of interest to all researchers who seek to gain a broader understanding of the mechanisms and factors at work in morphological variation and who are interested in the reassessment of morphological theorising in light of empirical data.

Book Building Categories in Interaction

Download or read book Building Categories in Interaction written by Caterina Mauri and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the topic of linguistic categorization from a novel perspective. While most of the early research has focused on how linguistic systems reflect some pre-existing ways of categorizing experience, the contributions included in this volume seek to understand how linguistic resources of various nature (prosodic cues, affixes, constructions, discourse markers, ...) can be ‘put to work’ in order to actively build categories in discourse and in interaction, to achieve social goals. This question is addressed in different ways by researchers from different subfields of linguistics, including psycholinguistics, conversation analysis, linguistic typology and discourse pragmatics, and a major point of innovation is represented in fact by the interdisciplinary nature of the volume and in the systematic search for converging evidence.

Book Morphosyntax

Download or read book Morphosyntax written by William Croft and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the results of sixty years of research in typology and universals, this textbook presents a comprehensive survey of Morphosyntax - the combined study of syntax and morphology. Languages employ extremely diverse morphosyntactic strategies for expressing functions, and Croft provides a comprehensive functional framework to account for the full range of these constructions in the world's languages. The book explains analytical concepts that serve as a basis for cross-linguistic comparison, and provides a rich source of descriptive data that can be analysed within a range of theories. The functional framework is useful to linguists documenting endangered languages, and those writing reference grammars and other descriptive materials. Each technical term is comprehensively explained, and cross-referenced to related terms, at the end of each chapter and in an online glossary. This is an essential resource on Morphosyntax for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and linguistic fieldworkers.

Book Legal Feminism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anna Simone
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2022-09-30
  • ISBN : 1000684733
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Legal Feminism written by Anna Simone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume offers an overview of the theories and practices of Italian legal feminism, presenting both the main themes addressed and the main protagonists of Italian feminist legal theory. The book is divided into two parts. The first is dedicated to deepening crucial issues that directly concern women’s knowledge and lives from a feminist perspective, such as the interconnection between law, rights and justice; diversity, difference and equality; sex, sexuality and reproduction; citizenship and borders; deviance, criminal matters and security; and victims, victimology, and vulnerability. Each set of thematic issues is analysed by a current Italian feminist legal scholar, who engages with multiple feminist voices in order to emphasise the need for an interdisciplinary approach to law from a feminist perspective. The second part of the book is devoted to outlining the paths of study, research and practice of specific and renowned Italian legal scholars who have provided the foundation for legal feminism in Italy: Letizia Gianformaggio, Tamar Pitch, Silvia Niccolai, and Lia Cigarini. The book thereby offers, for the first time, a comprehensive account of the traditions and trajectories of Italian legal feminism, thus opening up a dialogue with other feminist approaches to law and justice. The book will appeal to scholars in legal theory, critical and sociolegal studies, sociology, gender studies, and critical criminology.
