Book excerpt: Orthodoxia is a political novel set in the near future based on events that have transpired (in the real world) over the past 25 years. The Nation for which the fictional country stands as an Avatar is quickly sinking into the mire of a Fascist takeover. The Nation is being attacked from both sides but mostly from The Right's reactionary agenda: a holdover from the days of openly practiced slavery and widespread violence against vulnerable populations. This is a story of resistance by a few against the hatreds of the many who consider themselves patriots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept that people have of themselves as a 'person' is one of the most intimate notions that they hold. Yet the way in which the category of the person is conceived varies over time and space. In this volume, anthropologists, philosophers, and historians examine the notion of the person in different cultures, past and present. Taking as their starting point a lecture on the person as a category of the human mind, given by Marcel Mauss in 1938, the contributors critically assess Mauss's speculation that notions of the person, rather than being primarily philosophical or psychological, have a complex social and ideological origin. Discussing societies ranging from ancient Greece, India, and China to modern Africa and Papua New Guinea, they provide fascinating descriptions of how these different cultures define the person. But they also raise deeper theoretical issues: What is universally constant and what is culturally variable in people's thinking about the person? How can these variations be explained? Has there been a general progressive development toward the modern Western view of the person? What is distinctive about this? How do one's notions of the person inform one's ability to comprehend alternative formulations? These questions are of compelling interest for a wide range of anthropologists, philosophers, historians, psychologists, sociologists, orientalists, and classicists. The book will appeal to any reader concerned with understanding one of the most fundamental aspects of human existence.

Book The Operatic State

Download or read book The Operatic State written by Ruth Bereson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Operatic State examines the cultural, financial, and political investments that have gone into the maintenance of opera and opera houses in Europe, the USA and Australia. It analyses opera's nearly immutable form throughout wars, revolutions, and vast social changes throughout the world. Bereson argues that by legitimising the power of the state through universally recognised ceremonial ritual, opera enjoys a privileged status across three continents, often to the detriment of popular and indigenous art forms.

Book The Intercourse of Troubled Thoughts

Download or read book The Intercourse of Troubled Thoughts written by Joseph Emeka Anumbor and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a direct offspring of the schism in the Worldwide Anglican Communion concerning its traditional and future identity, which came apart in 2003 over the election of V. Gene Robinson, a practicing gay priest as the Bishop of New Hampshire, United States. When 62 out of 107 leaders of the Episcopal Church {US Anglicans} confirmed his ordination at its triennial conference later that year, the ice that held "God's frozen people" together for so long began to thaw. For the 38 provinces of World Anglicanism, it's been a sloppy and loud reversal of communion since its February 10-15, 1997 "Second Anglican Encounter in the South", at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The prophetic theme of that meeting; "The Place of Scripture in the Life and Mission of the Church in the 21st Century", has been challenged by theologically "enlightened" American, British and Canadian Councils. Revisionist ministers and methods then began to dictate the life and mission of these dioceses.
