Book L p Harmonic Analysis on SL 2 mathbb R

Download or read book L p Harmonic Analysis on SL 2 mathbb R written by William H. Barker and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1988 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central result of this paper is a characterization of the image of [script]C[superscript italic]p([italic]G) under the operator-valued Fourier transform. The main thread through the paper is a careful analysis of the matrix coefficients for the discrete series and principal series of representations of [bold]SL (2, [bold]R). The paper is long, very technical and is not for the faint-hearted.

Book Non abelian Harmonic Analysis

Download or read book Non abelian Harmonic Analysis written by Roger Howe and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the representation theory of the group SL(2, R), and some applications of this theory. The emphasis is in fact on the applications, some of which are outside representation theory and some are to representation theory itself. The topics outside representation theory are mostly of substantial classical importance (Fourier analysis, Laplace equation, Huyghen's Principle, Ergodic theory), while those inside representation theory mostly concern themes that have been central to Harish-Chandra's development of harmonic analysis on semisimple groups. This mix of topics should appeal to non-specialists in representation theory by illustrating how the theory can offer new perspectives on familiar topics, and by offering some insight into some important themes in representation theory itself.

Book Principles of Harmonic Analysis

Download or read book Principles of Harmonic Analysis written by Anton Deitmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tread of this book is formed by two fundamental principles of Harmonic Analysis: the Plancherel Formula and the Poisson S- mation Formula. We ?rst prove both for locally compact abelian groups. For non-abelian groups we discuss the Plancherel Theorem in the general situation for Type I groups. The generalization of the Poisson Summation Formula to non-abelian groups is the S- berg Trace Formula, which we prove for arbitrary groups admitting uniform lattices. As examples for the application of the Trace F- mula we treat the Heisenberg group and the group SL (R). In the 2 2 former case the trace formula yields a decomposition of the L -space of the Heisenberg group modulo a lattice. In the case SL (R), the 2 trace formula is used to derive results like the Weil asymptotic law for hyperbolic surfaces and to provide the analytic continuation of the Selberg zeta function. We ?nally include a chapter on the app- cations of abstract Harmonic Analysis on the theory of wavelets. The present book is a text book for a graduate course on abstract harmonic analysis and its applications. The book can be used as a follow up of the First Course in Harmonic Analysis, [9], or indep- dently, if the students have required a modest knowledge of Fourier Analysis already. In this book, among other things, proofs are given of Pontryagin Duality and the Plancherel Theorem for LCA-groups, which were mentioned but not proved in [9].

Book An Introduction to Harmonic Analysis on Semisimple Lie Groups

Download or read book An Introduction to Harmonic Analysis on Semisimple Lie Groups written by V. S. Varadarajan and published by . This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, this graduate-level textbook is an excellent introduction to the representation theory of semi-simple Lie groups. Professor Varadarajan emphasizes the development of central themes in the context of special examples. He begins with an account of compact groups and discusses the Harish-Chandra modules of SL(2,R) and SL(2,C). Subsequent chapters introduce the Plancherel formula and Schwartz spaces, and show how these lead to the Harish-Chandra theory of Eisenstein integrals. The final sections consider the irreducible characters of semi-simple Lie groups, and include explicit calculations of SL(2,R). The book concludes with appendices sketching some basic topics and with a comprehensive guide to further reading. This superb volume is highly suitable for students in algebra and analysis, and for mathematicians requiring a readable account of the topic.

Book Fourier Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elias M. Stein
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2011-02-11
  • ISBN : 1400831237
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Fourier Analysis written by Elias M. Stein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume, a three-part introduction to the subject, is intended for students with a beginning knowledge of mathematical analysis who are motivated to discover the ideas that shape Fourier analysis. It begins with the simple conviction that Fourier arrived at in the early nineteenth century when studying problems in the physical sciences--that an arbitrary function can be written as an infinite sum of the most basic trigonometric functions. The first part implements this idea in terms of notions of convergence and summability of Fourier series, while highlighting applications such as the isoperimetric inequality and equidistribution. The second part deals with the Fourier transform and its applications to classical partial differential equations and the Radon transform; a clear introduction to the subject serves to avoid technical difficulties. The book closes with Fourier theory for finite abelian groups, which is applied to prime numbers in arithmetic progression. In organizing their exposition, the authors have carefully balanced an emphasis on key conceptual insights against the need to provide the technical underpinnings of rigorous analysis. Students of mathematics, physics, engineering and other sciences will find the theory and applications covered in this volume to be of real interest. The Princeton Lectures in Analysis represents a sustained effort to introduce the core areas of mathematical analysis while also illustrating the organic unity between them. Numerous examples and applications throughout its four planned volumes, of which Fourier Analysis is the first, highlight the far-reaching consequences of certain ideas in analysis to other fields of mathematics and a variety of sciences. Stein and Shakarchi move from an introduction addressing Fourier series and integrals to in-depth considerations of complex analysis; measure and integration theory, and Hilbert spaces; and, finally, further topics such as functional analysis, distributions and elements of probability theory.

Book Geometric Control Theory

Download or read book Geometric Control Theory written by Velimir Jurdjevic and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric control theory is concerned with the evolution of systems subject to physical laws but having some degree of freedom through which motion is to be controlled. This book describes the mathematical theory inspired by the irreversible nature of time evolving events. The first part of the book deals with the issue of being able to steer the system from any point of departure to any desired destination. The second part deals with optimal control, the question of finding the best possible course. An overlap with mathematical physics is demonstrated by the Maximum principle, a fundamental principle of optimality arising from geometric control, which is applied to time-evolving systems governed by physics as well as to man-made systems governed by controls. Applications are drawn from geometry, mechanics, and control of dynamical systems. The geometric language in which the results are expressed allows clear visual interpretations and makes the book accessible to physicists and engineers as well as to mathematicians.
