Book Veiled Encounters

Download or read book Veiled Encounters written by Michael Harrigan and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel narratives were the principal source of knowledge about the lands of the Near East and the Indian Ocean Basin in 17th-century France. Claiming the authority of first-hand observation, they paradoxically rely for their legitimization on the tropes of an established literary tradition. The status of these texts remained ambiguous, not least because of their anecdotal depictions of great riches, brutality or sexual promise. Drawing on the insights of post-colonial scholarship, this study tackles a question given scant attention in previous work and suggests that beyond the hazy representation of the Orient, an opposition emerges between the threatening Near East and the indolent East Indies. Distinguishing recognizable representations from those generated by new encounters, this book questions the feasibility of cultural representation through travel, exploring a large corpus of original sources written by French ecclesiastics, gentlemen-travellers, ambassadors and adventurers. Linguistic, religious, cultural or geographical barriers meant most travellers remained distanced from the peoples about whom they would simultaneously become authoritative. The encounter was further transformed in narratives that were intended to entertain and to satisfy the criterion of curiosité. The 'Oriental' that emerges is a supremely variable entity, alternately naked or veiled, barbaric or civilized, menacing or attractive.

Book Orientalism in French Classical Drama

Download or read book Orientalism in French Classical Drama written by Michèle Longino and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michèle Longino examines the ways in which Mediterranean exoticism inflects the themes represented in French classical drama. Longino explores plays by Corneille, Molière and Racine; Le Cid, Médée, and Le bourgeois gentilhomme among others. She offers a consideration of the role the staging of the near Orient played in shaping a sense of French colonial identity. Drawing on histories, travel journals, memoirs and correspondence, and bringing together literary and historical concerns, Longino considers these dramatisations in the context of French-Ottoman relations at the time of their production.

Book Exoticism in Salammb

Download or read book Exoticism in Salammb written by Anne Mullen Hohl and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using contemporary theories of semiology, Professor Mullen Hohl offers a detailed analysis of exoticism in Flaubert's masterpiece. A pervasive schema of multiplicity and mutilation gives the novel its fundamental structure, rather than the previously accepted dichotomy based upon the dialectical opposition of moon and sun. In this manner Flaubert created metonymic correspondences, shared identities, and equivalences between certain characters and mythological gods of the ancient Mediterranean world--most importantly Adonis. Language and religion are seen as instruments of obfuscation and ambiguity. "Hohl thus offers a powerful challenge to the conventional reading of Salammbo as a series of dialectical oppositions between mail and female, sun and moon, civilized and barbarian." --Stirling Haig, French Review.

Book excerpt: From Perfectibility to Perversion: Meliorism in Eighteenth-Century France traces the evolution of human perfectibility discourse during the second half of the eighteenth century and the early post-Revolutionary era in France. Book Orientalism in Louis XIV s France

Download or read book Orientalism in Louis XIV s France written by Nicholas Dew and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Enlightenment, and before the imperialism of the later eighteenth century, how did European readers find out about the varied cultures of Asia? Orientalism in Louis XIV's France presents a history of Oriental studies in seventeenth-century France, mapping the place within the intellectual culture of the period that was given to studies of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Chinese texts, as well as writings on Mughal India. The Orientalist writers studied here produced books that would become sources used throughout the eighteenth century. Nicholas Dew places these scholars in their own context as members of the "republic of letters" in the age of the scientific revolution and the early Enlightenment.
