Book excerpt: Depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, l'Orient arabe, tout comme l'Empire ottoman dont il faisait partie, a été le théâtre d'une transformation des valeurs et des réalités sociales, inspirée par l'Europe des révolutions politique et industrielle. Mais la "tentation de l'Occident" s'est accompagnée d'une juste méfiance envers les projets de domination des puissances européennes qui ont établi des réseaux d'influence et de clientèle complexes, alors qu'émergeaient deux grands courants de pensée politique : l'arabisme et l'islamisme. La révolution jeune-turque de 1908 puis la Première Guerre mondiale bouleversent la situation, sonnant le glas de l'Empire ottoman. La France et l'Angleterre appliquent le système des mandats. Si la réussite administrative est incontestable, l'échec politique aura été très lourd pour l'avenir de ces régions. L'Egypte, de son côté, a progressé vers une indépendance certaine et Ibn Sa 'ud a fondé l'Arabie moderne. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'Orient arabe reste surtout un enjeu pour les pays occidentaux, tandis qu'apparaît la superpuissance américaine. En s'appuyant sur des documents fondamentaux pour la compréhension des mentalités et des ressorts de l'Histoire, cet ouvrage éclaire ainsi les bases d'une histoire qui apparaît trop souvent compliquée, et l'évolution des sociétés arabes contemporaines.
