Book ILO Histories

Download or read book ILO Histories written by Jasmien van Daele and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, the International Labour Organization (ILO) celebrated its ninetieth anniversary. The First World War and the revolutionary wave it provoked in Russia and elsewhere were powerful inspirations for the founding of the ILO. There was a growing understanding that social justice, in particular by improving labour conditions, was an essential precondition for universal peace. Since then, the ILO has seen successes and set-backs; it has been ridiculed and praised. Much has been written about the ILO; there are semi-official histories and some critical studies on the organization's history have recently been published. Yet, further source-based critical and comprehensive analyses of the organization's origins and development are still lacking. The present collection of eighteen essays is an attempt to change this unsatisfactory situation by complementing those histories that already exist, exploring new topics, and offering new perspectives. It is guided by the observation that the ILO's history is not primarily about «elaborating beautiful texts and collecting impressive instruments for ratification» but about effecting «real change and more happiness in peoples' lives».

Book The International Labour Organization

Download or read book The International Labour Organization written by Daniel Maul and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive account of the International Labour Organization’s 100-year history. At its heart is the concept of global social policy, which encompasses not only social policy in its national and international dimensions, but also development policy, world trade, international migration and human rights. The book focuses on the ILO’s roles as a key player in debates on poverty, social justice, wealth distribution and social mobility subjects and as a global forum for addressing these issues. The study puts in perspective the manifold ways in which the ILO has helped structure these debates and has made – through its standard-setting, technical cooperation and myriad other activities – practical contributions to the world of work and to global social policy.

Book excerpt: Even though it failed to prevent World War II, the League of Nations left a lasting legacy. This precedent-setting international organization created important institutions and initiatives in labor, economics, culture, science, and more, from the International Labor Organization to initiatives targeting education, taxation, nutrition, and other issues. Otherwise marginalized in global diplomacy, Latin Americans were involved, and often acted as leaders, in many League-related activities and made a number of positive contributions to the League. In this book foremost scholars from Europe and the Americas consider Latin American leadership and experiences in the League of Nations. Using research in frequently overlooked collections, Beyond Geopolitics makes groundbreaking contributions to the study of Latin American international relations, the history of the League of Nations, and the broader story of cooperation across borders.

Book Legal Effect of World War II on Treaties of the United States

Download or read book Legal Effect of World War II on Treaties of the United States written by Stuart Hull MacIntyre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study consists of an empirical examination of the legal effect of war on treaties to which the United States and one or more enemy states were parties at the outbreak of World War II. Doctrine is regarded as of secondary importance to this study and is therefore treated summarily. Some attention is devoted to historical aspects of the problem to lend perspective to the developments of World War II. The basic plan of this work is simple. After definitions have been established for "war" and "treaties," certain assumptions implicit in this study are discussed. Next, relevant doctrinal questions are considered. This is followed by an analysis of American practice concerning the legal effect of war on treaties of the United States from the early part of the 19th century down to World War II. The main part of the study, in which the treaties are arranged according to subject matter, carries the discussion down to the provisions in the peace treaties which relate to revival of prewar agreements. The chapter on the peace treaty provisions concludes with consideration of the special situation arising from the absence of a final peace treaty with Germany. Conclusions are then drawn from the experience of the United States. The literature of international law is filled with opinions on the effect of war on treaties, but only rarely have the authors stopped to analyze the practice of states methodically.
