Download or read book Fondations et naissances des Droits de l homme written by Jérôme FERRAND and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Religion and Human Rights

Download or read book Religion and Human Rights written by Hans-Georg Ziebertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between human rights and religiosity. It discusses whether the impact of religiosity on human rights is liberational or suppressive, and sheds light on the direction in which the relationship between religion and human rights is expected to develop. The questions explored in this volume are: Which are the rights that are currently debated or under pressure? What is the position on human rights that churches and religious communities represent? Are there tensions between churches, religious communities and the state? Which rights are especially relevant for young people and which relate to adolescents life-world experiences? Covering 17 countries, the book describes two separate, yet connected studies. The first study presents research by experts from individual countries describing the state of human rights and neuralgic points anticipated in individual societies. The other study presents specific findings on the relationship between these two social phenomena from empirical research in a population of high school students. Studying this particular population allows insights into social trends, value systems and attitudes on human rights, as well as an indication of the likely directions of development, and potential room for intervention.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Definition and Development of Human Rights and Popular Sovereignty in Europe

Download or read book Definition and Development of Human Rights and Popular Sovereignty in Europe written by European Commission for Democracy through Law and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role do the people play in defining and developing human rights? This volume explores the very topical issue of the lack of democratic legitimisation of national and international courts and the question of whether rendering the original process of defining human rights more democratic at the national and international level would improve the degree of protection they afford. The authors venture to raise the crucial question: When can a democratic society be considered to be mature enough so as to be trusted to provide its own definition of human rights obligations?

Book excerpt: This "Liber Amicorum" was written by prominent colleagues and friends of the President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, in honour of his 70th birthday and in celebration of a lifelong career devoted to the promotion of international law. The contributors are, each and every one, the most outstanding professors and thinkers in their field, and the range of topics reflects a broad scope of current thought and theory in international law. The book is divided into a general introductory part on the life and times of Judge Bedjaoui, followed by four sections. Section One is on General International Law, featuring a range of articles from environmental treaties to the role of the United Nations. Section Two is devoted to the International Court of Justice and includes analyses of the role and procedure of the ICJ. Section Three contains an interesting selection of articles in the field of Human Rights, from self-determination to the concept of universality. Section Four addresses a miscellanea of international legal questions, especially those related to international organizations. The contributions are in both English and French.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking study of the role of Muslims in eighteenth-century France From the beginning, French revolutionaries imagined their transformation as a universal one that must include Muslims, Europe's most immediate neighbors. They believed in a world in which Muslims could and would be French citizens, but they disagreed violently about how to implement their visions of universalism and accommodate religious and social difference. Muslims, too, saw an opportunity, particularly as European powers turned against the new French Republic, leaving the Muslim polities of the Middle East and North Africa as France's only friends in the region. In Muslims and Citizens, Coller examines how Muslims came to participate in the political struggles of the revolution and how revolutionaries used Muslims in France and beyond as a test case for their ideals. In his final chapter, Coller reveals how the French Revolution's fascination with the Muslim world paved the way to Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Egypt in 1798.
