Cecilius demande donc à Marcus de se faire le juge impartial entre lui et Octave ; commence alors une « joute verbale », au cours de laquelle Cecilius va expliquer pourquoi il n’est pas devenu chrétien et continue à croire dans les divinités romaines ; puis Octave va lui répondre, et celui qui aura le mieux parlé sera déclaré vainqueur. Une façon agréable de présenter le christianisme, en exposant puis en réfutant les idées fausses véhiculées dans les premiers siècles, à Rome, sur cette religion.
